Hi,

Is it possible to take an rhce exam without attending any courses?
The courses are very expensive and I don't think that they would be very beneficial for me. I'd rather spend 6 months doing the preparation on my own and then just take the exam.

Does anyone know of any examination centre in England, preferably in London area?

All certifications are possible to take to my knowledge without having to take a course, unless it's some type of special vendor type class and certification. There are plenty of people I know that have their RHCE without taking the course. Check redhat's site for more info on testing places.

Just get a test machine that you can configure any way you want, including trashing it without your caring that happened, some books, and a connection to the internet. I've used all those things, and found that exposure to doing a lot of stuff helped. (LPIC-1)

I'll let you know on January 25th since that's when I am taking my RHCE exam. I have taken ZERO classes for RHCE. I only bought 1 book and have read through it and done some of the hands-on labs

Well I took the RHCE exam and I failed the RHCE portion, but I did pass the RHCT portion with flying colors. I already know my weak point (mail services), and I missed the 70 point minimum goal by a few points. I am sure I can pass the RHCE when I take the test again.

So having NOT taken any classes or courses, I would say it is possible to pass the RHCE. Red Hat says that 50% of people who take the RHCE test fail. Looks like I fall into that statistic!

Well I can't tell you exactly what's on the test, but you have 2 phases. The 1st phase is troubleshooting and deals with problems with the system. You HAVE to pass 4 of X problems. So in other words, if you can't do the 1st four problems, then you automatically will fail. You can do whatever you can to solve the problems, but they won't tell you what the problem is, but to just "make it work". This part was the easiest, in my opinion. Everyone solved the problems in less than 30 minutes and the proctor let us go immediately onto phase 2.

The 2nd phase is installation and setting up of services, which was much more in-depth and time consuming. So you have your typical duties like installing the OS, installing packages, setting up partitions, users, and so forth. Then they give you tasks to do and setting up services. None of this is secretive since it's all on the Red Hat website. You set up things like mail servers, web servers, ftp servers, permissions, groups, access control lists, SELinux, etc... Check the Red Hat website for specifics on what you need to be prepared for. There really were no trick questions or anything out of the ordinary. Very straight forward. Either you can do it or you can't. And apparently I can't do mail servers.

As I mentioned, it's definitely possible to get your RHCE, depending on experience and research, without having to take those $2,500 cram classes.

good work, I have that same book and want to get my RHCE, trying to get my MCSE right now too. I think I need to finish up the MCSE and then give full attention to the RHCE. good job again though.

Good luck, terran2k! I would definitely say to tackle one certification at a time. You could pass the RHCE if you use that Michael Jang book and do all the hands-on labs he tells you to do. PRACTICE, PRACTICE! That's what I did and it worked.

One thing I don't like about MCSE is that it is more about knowledge than hands-on. So you spend a few weeks studying for one test, and then another, and then another, until you've done your 6 or 7 Microsoft tests. Whereas RHCE, you take one test and you're done! It's good to get it all done in one sweep, if you know what I mean.

Take advantage of Microsoft's free test insurance right now. It expires in June 2008, I believe. I have to go some time this year and do my MCSE2008 for the new Microsoft Server 2008! I'm looking forward to their new server OS, despite the hatred of Microsoft on this website.
