I guess it depends on what you are looking to do, would you rather do sysadmin work or programming work? I understand exactly how you feel about not getting a chance to specialize on things. I work for a company under 100 employees and I am the entire IT department. This means I do system administration work (patching software, adding new users, deleting users, configuring new systems, implementing security procedures, etc) and do helpdesk calls (basic user problems - can't sign on, email issue, etc). While we are currently looking for a new person to take on this role, it has not left me much time to specialize on things.
I am Linux certified, but I have not had the chance to bring Linux into our enterprise, besides my laptop, like I would like. I have my MCSA but am working on adding Exchange to my list of certs and then adding some security certifications to them. I like the personal chalange of learning new things and then passing the test. I haven't had a wage review since my last test, so I can't say how they affect salary here.
