LPI certified wonders how to get experience

I'm not really sure if this is the proper forum for my question but nowhere else seems to fit. What I would like to know is how does one become a Linux administrator? I see lots of job postings but everyone requires at a minimum 2 years of previous Linux admin experience.
It seems like a catch-22. How does one get this experience in order to be qualified for these jobs? Currently I am a network systems student. I am nearly done my program and I have been in love with Linux every since I was first exposed to it. Last summer I achieved my LPI-1 certificate. I know a fair amount about Linux. I run three Debian boxes and one Fedora box at home. I have some work experience with Debian and Ubuntu from my co-op but nothing in an administrative capacity. IMHO I am really good and I would be very capable with a Junior Linux Admin type role. I just am not finding these opportunities. I am almost done my co-op with my present employer. I don't think I would want to come back to work here as the IT department is very small and there isn't an opportunity to become a Linux admin here. They told me during my interview that there would be Linux work here but that his been few and far between. I am willing to do whatever it takes to get the experience. I will volunteer my time if I have to.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Btw, I live close to Toronto, Ontario.

Thanks for reading this.

Occasional Linux work is better than no work at all. Moreover, as you become a trusted member of the team, you may have opportunities to introduce Linux to the infrastructure, where appropriate.

Well, that's the right attitude. It's helpful that you live near a large metro area. If you aren't able to find volunteer opportunities, you might even consider posting that your volunteer services are available to non-profits, or whatever you feel comfortable with. (Use craigslist or whatever popular forum it is canadians use... ).

And in your free time, continue to practice frequently. When you get your big chance you'll want to be able to do the work well.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice anomie. I agree that some Linux work is better than none at all but at my company it is really close to none. I think I would be better off at another company. I kind of feel like I'm wasting my time here.

As far as craigslist goes, yes we do use that in Canada too That's where I see most of these postings.
