LPI certification study material
 

hi all,

i'm looking for a good study material - either online resource or a book - to prepare for LPI certification. I have done my research on this and could not settle on one so looking for suggestions. The IBM developerWorks material is there. But I don't know whether it extensive. I was reading the Linux System Administrator's Guide from TLDP but the version available there has some sections as to be completed.

Looking forward for suggestions from people who has been through this process.

The DW stuff is written by Dan Robbins - Gentoo Chief Architect, it's pretty comprehensive. Just remember... certs will only get your foot in the door.. experience always wins so work hard

All I can say is Amen to that. Can't tell you how many times I have ran into someone that brags about being certified only to find that when faced with a problem they freeze up due to lack of experience or they really just memorized enough info to pass the test.

@jstephens84,.. Can you please then advise him(@anand.arumug) on how to get the help he really needs? Maybe recommend a way he will be hired without certifications and no experience.

@anand.arumug,.. Please try the following it might be helpful. It might take you up to 4 months to complete with no social life.
1. Buy this book,.. RHCE Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide (Exam RH302) (Certification Press) (Paperback)

2. Download and install CentOS,.. Install VMware workstation on it,.. If you have a enough memory and hard disk space run 2 Virtual Machines(CentOS) on it using that to practice the lab from the book above trust me you will be fine.

3. Get a book on Scripting,. You will need it. Also try to get your hands on any of this http://www.linuxcbt.com/products_lin...ng_edition.php

4. Get your hands on these videos,.. Go through them at least twice.

With all these you should be able to defend the cert that you have,..If you can really master all these experience will be acquired in no time.

One way would be to get involved with a local LUG group. We have helped all kinds of people who have experience at home but no work experience. I am not saying anything is wrong with getting a certification. I am just saying don't study to pass the exam. know why you are doing something. Not just this is what the book told me to do. Also it doesn't hurt to have a friend in high places so Network Network Network with anybody in the company that you are applying with.

Thank you so much for your reply - @stevetokyo. Thats exactly what I was looking for. I am a C/C++ programmer by the day. And I have some experience with linux. I know few things on scripting, python and all these days I resolve the problems I have with my linux machine by looking up on the forums and do it. But I want to learn Linux administration properly and thoroughly. But I was not sure what the best way to work on it. I whole heartedly agree with all the suggestions above. But to get there I need to take some baby steps in the right direction and your suggestion fills in that gap. Thanks a lot.

Both of these are great help.

Here's my categorization of linux cert books:

LPIC-1:
#1: LPIC-1: Linux Professional Institute Certification Study Guide (2nd edition) from Sybex
#2: LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell (2nd edition) from O'Reilly
As far as I know, OReilly's book is the only one covering LPIC-2 objectives.

I mainly used those two for my LPIC-1. Sybex was 1st revision at that time, it was updated this year for revised LPIC-1 objectives.
There's also new Jang's book (haven't used it):

As for the RHCE:
1# Red Hat® Certified Technician & Engineer (RHCT and RHCE) Training Guide and Administrator's Reference by Asghar Ghori
- new book covering RHCE/RHCT. Got it a week ago from Amazon. I like the way it's laid out. Prefer it to the Jang's book :).

#2 RHCE Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide (Exam RH302)
- classic, sort of "RHCE for dummies" book (Jang likes to treat his audience like complete newbies).

Can you please elaborate on why you suggest to run 2 instances of CentOS virtual machines on a system that already has CentOS installed?

When you have two instances,. you build one instance for troubleshooting and the other for Configuration. Also you can test access from any one of the machines when you are testing since they are on the same network.

By the way,.. I took a good look at the content of the book,.. Red Hat® Certified Technician & Engineer (RHCT and RHCE) Training Guide and Administrator's Reference by Asghar Ghori. It is a good book and well laid out. I think I will be getting one since I want to retake my RHCE.
