Just finished undergrad, what next? (RHCT, RHCE, LINUX+, LPI?)
 

I was thinking of getting the RHCT/E certification, simply because RH is well known and respected. I figured it would be more than most bring to the table in terms of Linux certification. I dont officially commence until December, giving me a few months to land a new job and my cert.

I am not too concerned about difficulty, I graduated top of my class and can learn anything OS/HW/language related.

So which would be the best for me, in a professional sense?

I plan to do *NIX administration the next 3 years while I work on my MIS.

I feel getting a RHCE around October would be my best bet, to leave my current UNIX/Window distributed support role come this december.


Any seasoned professionals that can give advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Red Hat certs are the gold standard right now. LPI is well thought of too. Not in the same class though, I don't think, yet, at least.

One thing concerns me about the RHCE: if you have the RHCE, that might disqualify you for consideration for other Linux distros, or other versions of UNIX.

Employers may jump to the conclusion, that you only know redhat, and that you are only interested in redhat.

I wish there something like the RHCE that was vendor neutral.

I suggest getting your MBA. The combination of a technical background with an understanding of how the organization functions in a business-sense should prove very valuable.

I worked extensively with Red Hat. In fact, that is all that was taught in my school. Microsoft, Cisco, and Red Hat where the main technologies that were taught.

After getting my AS I got my A+, Network+, Linux+, and CCNA while working on my BS.

I landed an interview with a company that is a Sun Solaris shop. In the interview I was asked if I've ever worked with Solaris. I was honest and I said "no" but I continued to say that I worked with Red Hat extensively and that I _very_ comfortable on the command line.

The interviewer (now my boss) was happy that I worked with an "Enterprise Class" OS, and proceeded to ask me Unix questions...(BTW I only got 2 wrong...and they were Solaris specific questions).

Here I am 2 years later working as a Systems Administrator finishing up my BS and working towards my RCHE...
