What is Lindows OS good for?
I currently use windows, but want to switch to linux. I have been looking at many versions of linux and I am leaning toward Lindows OS by Linspire. What is Lindows good for? What are the pros and cons? Please reply, especially the Lindows users...
Thanks!

Take a look into this thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=149795
It's a bit flame-bait sometimes, but many in there made very good points about Lindows or whatever it's now called. Personally, I'm with Caeda in this one

I'm not sure about that. If it's a pressed CD maybe it could be used for a coaster? Or you could put the CD in a microwave oven for a pretty light show?

If learning how linux actually works (read: getting in and modifying system files yourself) is what you're going for, I highly recommend Slackware. A lot of people'll tell you that it's too hard for newbies, but it really helped me understand how stuff works.
If you want the easiest possible experience, I'd recommend Mandrake or Fedora. They'll do most of the work for you, and they have gui tools that'll help you configure everything.
Just my $.02

I've had vitually no trouble with Lindows other than what I did to myself. I run OpenOffice and Opera without trouble. Digikam accessed my Canon A75 without a hitch. Gimp does my graphics chores. None of this software came on the CD -- I got it all with CNR. I did pay $5 extra for a version of Xine that shows commercial DVD moves on my PC screen. Unlike Windows, I have not had to load any drivers and all my hardware was recognized and useable automatically. I'm happy with Linspire. If and when I change distro's it will probably be more for the fun of chnaging and learning something new.

I think that the new users will love the simpleness of Linspire. It installs in less than 10 min and sets your hardware up automatically. Software installations are a breeze with CNR and the company is coming up with new interesting products and services all the time. Not to mention the awesome and very friendly community at http://linspire.com/forum.
Welcome to Linspire, you won't regret your choice!

Thanks for the great ideas guys. Personally I dont like Lin-whatever either, I dont think it deserves to be a linux flavor, because actually, I'd rather use Windoze, its much faster than lin-sumthin. As much as I hate winblows, I have to admit it, lindows sucks balls.
P.S. what about a cheap frisbee? or are the AOL CD's you get in the mail suffecient?

maybe some moderator could clean up in these forums from flame-n-fud posts like kodaxx here?
if not, I think you should remove the linspire section since all the fud from "anything but geek linux" people in here seem to scare linspire people off... and I'm about to leave too now. linspire's own forum as much more friendly imo.

Yeah, sorry, I just really don't like Lindows. Maybe because I ran it on an i486. Maybe thats why it was slow. I noticed it had quite a few bugs, but it could be different since newers versions have appeared. If you'd like a simpler Linux though, I suggest Mandrake or SuSe. Didn't mean to scare anyone off. It just wasn't my favorite.

Mod Note: could we keep it positive and useful please. Linspire is a Linux distribution and we are supposed to be a community promoting all flavours of Linux.
The original post was a serious question - if all you wish to do is to flame a part of the community please find another forum to do it in.
That is the end of this public announcement.

OK, now that this might get back on track.
Linspire is great way to try linux out for the first time. It's about as simple to use as windows so it has an attraction from that point of view. It IS a bit of a resource hog, so I wouldn't recommend it for anything slower than 700MHz and 128 megs of ram. If you are running older hardware than that I recommend another distro. After my recent experience with Mandrake 10 I can HIGHLY recommend it for newbies. If you already have Linspire though, go right ahead and give'er a try you might even like it.

This thread was not in the linspire forum when I commented. I still suggest it is not the best linux distribution to use but I would not have dismissed it as total rubbish in a linspire forum. In a general linux forum, when the question is asked, then sure, I will suggest tossing it in the bin... There are better ways for new linux users to start like knoppix and mandrake.
