Lindows

Lindows seems one of the more promising American consumer ditros. It is definetely for people who want a worry free and care free install. Also it is nice if you ARE someone who prefers a Windows ME type of experience. It is very "private consumer" level. That is not to knock it. Just to reiterate what has been said in this thread already: Easy install, no fuss and not very many options.

One thing that drives me crazy is the terrible naming scheme; first Lindows and then Linspire. I think they are both terrible names. OF course, Linux distros don't seem to have any luck with naming their stuff.

Another thing that made me switch to Suse was the Click N Run thing. I have a one year subscription to CNR and a LOT of the apps that they have through click and run are 1 or 2 versions behind...for instance; Wine. I NEVER got Wine to work at all with Lindows. When you post on the Lindows site about this problem the only response I ever got was "I don't think I ever got the CNR version of Wine to work with Lindows." So....if you are the average non-nerd, downloading software from CNR and it doesn't even start when you click on it, what are you going to think about LINUX as a whole? Joe Lunchpail and Suze Housewife WILL NOT differentiate one distro from another. That is the danger involved. If Linux is to overtake Windows in the market as a whole, then the shit is going to have to work the way the distros claim it does.

Wine is to get some (at least some) Windows programs running under Linux, did you forget? Wine does run in Lindows (Wine for Lindows) so .... what is it? Hardware? Skills? Both? (I mean, it should work!)

But .. Win-programs run really better and at all (OK, most) times in .... Windows.

Linux needs "Linux" programs imho.

BTW: How many Linux programs did you get going in Windows and by what means?

OK, I know this sounds all a bit silly to some but I do believe that if running Windows programs under Linux is your goal, you're waisting time and efforts. Windows is arround to do just that.

Windows has too many problems and the OS and programs are way too expensive. Yes, I can pirate it all but will be colored "Illegal" and don't feel for that. So Linux is the best alternative I found and it is a HELL of a alternative!

We need .... something better and more affordable all together then Windows and Lindows/Linspire is a giant step in that direction. Its easier and faster to install and it works just fine. Windows has no place on my drives anymore. I simply don't need it for the things I do (I am a home user, the group Lindows.com.inc is focussing on and they do a very good job in my eyes).
Programs behind a bit in CNR? Maybe but then again do you really need to bring your one year old car back to the dealer and have the latest type at all the times to go to your work?

Nothing to wish? Yes, of course! Who brings us voice and video chat in CNR (?)
