SquiggleOS

I see from another post that SquiggleOS is a free rebuild of Linspire. Has it been modified, or is it identical enough that I could use it to effectively try out Linspire for free? I'm willing to pay for Linspire, but I'd really like to know first if my wireless network will run in it. (So far, the only distro it works on consistently is Xandros. Don't ask me why.)

Well AFAIK it's based on Linspire but the non-GPL parts have been removed. this includes things like : Bitstream Fonts, CNR and the Audio Tutorials (probably a few other things aswell).
so I guess you can use it to test your hardware but I guess it also depends on the version of Linspire that it's based on.
Linspire is now working on a new release so it's possible that new release might work better on your system then Linspire 5.0, but the oposite is also possible.

why not try the live disc? this will allow you to test all your hardware requirements first, also Linspire maintains a compatibilty list of Hardware on it's site, check there too. If in doubt ask on their forum, it's very noob friendly, someone maybe able to help.

and if you want to assist them with their compatibility list please consider sending them a "Diagnsotic Report" :

1. Go to console (L > Run Programs > Utilities > Terminal Program)
2. Type: wget -nv http://info.linspire.com/sysreport/sysreport -O /tmp/sysreport
3. Type: cd /tmp
4. Type: chmod +x sysreport
5. Type: ./sysreport
