Like all forms of Linux, Linspire's ability to run Microsoft Windows applications is undefined.
It comes with WINE, and you can always add the Codeweavers' product, or Win4Lin etc.
Answer is always vague... "Your mileage will vary" lol

it depends on the program. i have crossover and i jsut installed quicktime with it so i could watch a trailer. while i was about to download iit to play in the standalone player, the trailer began playing in quicktime(for windows) in firefox with no configuration at all.
your mileage may vary, but crossover office has been very good so far, and i heard they are adding dx9 support to it too.

I wonder if the Quicktime that ran could have been a plugin for Firefox... and I'm pretty sure that most of the formats they use are supported through the browser/plugin combination. But I could be wrong.
But isn't it so nice to see things really starting to work across platforms
I can use quite a few fairly basic apps written for MS Windows, but they are mostly odd-ball ones. I should really try hard to road test real ones like Encarta Atlas, etc.
There will always be some speciallist ones that don't, though, until MS make their api calls fully open to view. Thats the problem for the guys doing WINE programming, I think.

Yeah, I heard they were doing that. Great stuff.

Where did you get that information?
It dates from maybe three years ago or more, when they and other Linux developers were putting their resources into WINE.
I'll bet you got it off an old list on an obscure website.
There is an excellent post by LindowsKendall on this forum somewhere, which explains why Linux does not read MS applications natively, and the difficulties associated with doing it, and why application developed for Linux generally do the job better, except for specific programs that have no equivalent.
It also explains why they changed philosophy themselves, when they still were using the brand name of Lindows.
I'll leave you to go and find it.
Instead, go read more recent stuff; you might even go and read linspire.com's own website (which is up to date on that and other topics).
But please let's not denigrate a product without getting your facts correct first. And it is called Linspire. Not Lindows.

I have used Linspire to a lesser degree and enjoyed what I got to do on it. I am a total when it comes to the linux enviorment and Linspire (aka Lindows) has given me the chance to get my feet wet without all the compiling code as I have attempted on linux. Sorry to anyone/everyone else (not bashing) but I do not have the knack for compiling or figuring out all the commands of Linux. I figure once I get more use to the Lindows, I might make another attempt at Linux Mandrake. I have linux mandrake 10.0, mandrake 6.0 and red hat 6.2. I also have lindows live. I lost my copy of lindows when I moved from Alabama to Georgia in December. Anyone know where I can get a free copy of Lindows? I know Linux distros are suspose to be free to D/L but can not seem to find where to get lindows at for free. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Yull29m try searching from this url: http://support.linspire.com for an email address to write to, or go to: http://forum.linspire.com and paste your request there.
If you go to this link, taken from another post on this forum, you may find a solution: http://www.linspire.com/buy2
If you bought into CNR and registered yourself in their forums or to download, you may even find you can download from there, too.
Don't get confused with the word "free" regarding Linux. You need to read and understand what is written here: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?FreeAsInBeer and http://freeasinspeechandbeer.com/ - you might also like to read what I posted in one of the two threads this thread used to be, although the mods may have removed it!
Linux is all about choice, and there we go, you have several (lol)

If you already have an account with them, you can download it free, you didnt need to even buy it the first time, just needed to create an account.
1.Linspire.com
2.Click on my Linpsire
3.Sign in, (if you go there all the time and have it where you dont have to sign in skip this step)
4.Click on my products on the left hand side.
5.Click on CD downloads
6.Click on installation CD
7.Click proceed with download
8.Click on the Primary FTP server,(they tell you the back up is slower anyways)
9.Click save to disk when prompted
and your done, hope it helped! This applys to anyone who creates an account with Linspire.

Ok, here's the problem with the free offer @ linspire.com/buy2.
I did D/L the .ISO and burned it to a cd using nero's newest version. I burned it as a data file, if that matters, and then restarted my compaq ( PC I want linspire on) and it did not read the .ISO file and begin install as it is suspose to. I have a mandrake 10.0 bootable 3.5 and can get in to linux mandrake 10.0 text prompt, or bash prompt (whichever is the preferred term) if there is away to install the .ISO file from there I am willing to give it a try. Never bothered with the CNR when had lindows, and the copy of lindows I had, I bought from ebay for $10.00 so did not register it. And btw, eagles-lair, I realize that free does not ever really mean %100 free, it means something along the lines of discounted in most situations and I know there are always cost in some way or another. I know Linux is free for the most part but you can not go to a store to get it free, therefore the cost is of time for the download. I am not meaning to come off rude, so pls, no one take me wrong. I am just really tired physically and I am tired mentally of this compaq. What I want is simple, a simplistic linux format that my father (who has only used windows) can navigate through with little to no trouble. I figure Lindows is suspose to be more user friendly in the style that windows is and therefore would like to get it working for him. If I have to type in script, just inform me what to type and I will give it a try. I have the hard drive completely blank atm, no partitions, not even a format, just dead blank. All I have to do is put my mdk floppy in and boot up, type rescue, then select prompt screen from the list and I am in linux text mode. Everything in that boot style, acts just as linux text, even the commands work the same so it is safe to say that I can operate through it to get this .ISO installed if needed. And once again, I would like to thank everyone for being so kind to me and for your fast replies to my post with all the helpfull info you have given me. I do not mean to be a bother, just attempting to go where I've never been before and learn a little bit on the way there, where ever the hell it may take me.

Okay mate.
Let's get the CD burn right before anything else.
No, you do not want to burn it as a data file
You need to burn it as an image. That will extract the files from the iso and burn them individually to disk.
Do that and try again.
There is a page on the websites for most distros that gives step by step instructions on how to burn an iso. Linspire is no different. Theirs even gives you instructions for several different types of burning program, both windows and linux.
I understand your frustration and being tired.
Try that and come back. Seriously, best of luck with it.

Sorry, But I must take exception with the statement that Linspire is not Linux.
The plug-ins are there, the multimedia is there, the security is there, the peace of mind is there,.....need I go on?
I use approximately 15 different O.S.'s on several different machines and I find that each one fills it's own niche.
We all already know the pitfalls of the Gate's bandwagon and it's sad.
I feel that Linux is like ice cream. It comes in many flavors so that different tastes can be fulfilled.
Have a great day!
The Rev.

Yull, If you look around in your nero program it should have an option to burn from image, or copy from image, thats the selection you want to use, Also if you want somthing just like Linspire, Try Mepis, its free, and just as easy to use, it has all the plug in's ready to use, its based on Debian and it uses synaptic, the programs that are in synaptic are strait from the Debian repositorys, so you have thousands of Packeges to choose from, (if its not already installed) Plus its a live cd, so you can see if it works on your system before installing it.
