Linspire 5-0 headache
Hey y'all. Just got Linspire 5-0 and must say it has gotten much better, but I still have one problem. I use Linuxant's driver loader software for my wireless card. I download the 2MB DEB file and it installs via dpkg, but complains about no kernel headers/source to build the kernel-module. This is after I find and untar the headers that linspire has generously included. All the symlinks are there, but it still doesn't work.
I have some experience working with linux, so as long as it ain't too complicated, I should be able to follow. Oh yeah, Linspire's support has been down the entire week so I cannot get a hold of them. How ironic
Anyhow, any help will be greatly appreciated and as always, feel free to ask for more info.
Peace - NZ

Hmmm don't know anything about wireless cards my friend. I know the kernel they use for 5-0 (which is similar to several other distros) can have a problem with wireless because I have read others' reports... maybe you should log into linspire's own specialist support thread for LAN problems?
Re their support having been down, well I guess they decided after having worked many long hours the last 3 weeks to get it out, they deserved some sleep as well as some R&R lol!

If you went to /usr/src and saw tarballs of kernel-source and kernel-headers, they are the wrong ones to use. I found that out when trying to get Cisco vpnclient working. The last I heard, you had to go to CNR to download los-kernel-source-2.6.10, los-kernel-headers and I think los-kernel-config tarballs and extract them.
Going to CNR doesn't make sense because I assume the source code should be freely available, not pay for CNR in order to get it. Is this a GPL issue, I don't know.

It's just a convenient location for people with a CNR account as I understand it.
You do not have to have a CNR account to download the source code, which is freely available. I have looked to see with my own eyes that it is there, but I never noted the url because I merely did it to satisfy myself it is there. I never downloaded it because I have no use for it. Does that make sense?

I went back there myself and it looked like you could download from CNR without being a member. At least the "Are you sure?" window popped up.

Well, Murphy's Law strikes again. Why am I not suprised
Well, since i cannot get on the Internet as I stated above, I guess I am FUBAR unless I can just magically pull 50ft of patch cable out so I can get to the DSL modem, since I don't have it .
lrhogusa, thanks for pointing me in the right direction with where to get the right stuff. More importantly, thanks to all who helped out - I owe you guys BIG time.

NfiniteZERO that's a bummer... I suppose you could physically move it near the modem? Like sitting on a trolley or something?
Or even use dialup if you have a decent external modem?
Dunno what else to suggest, mate.
BTW 50ft long patchbay cords are available. I have one here just in case!
Last time it got used was when we had someone who chain-smoked came to stay with us for a couple of weeks. The cord stretched from my study where the router/switcher is out into the patio where he could smoke his lungs off lol

LOL thanks for the story eagle. I'll think of something, don't worry. Besides I would get that 50ft cord, but no $$
I was thinking about putting Linspire on my laptop, but my girlfriend plays Vampire: The Masquarade - Bloodlines on it, so by not having it on there, it could mean the end of the world as we know it (her computer REALLY sucks and cannot play it, and she LOVES that game). With it, I can get 25ft from the modem and I have a 25ft cable. Like I said, I'll figure it out.
