LindowsOS Giveaway Question for Community Liason
I've seen several "Lindows.com is giving away Lindows OS 4.5 Developers Edition with this coupon" on the Web on various sites (like OSNews, and others). How come you guys never give away a free copy of the LindowsOS (4.5) Laptop Edition? I would like to try it out on a laptop (and maybe a desktop). Is there someone at Lindows.com you can say "hey, we always give away this developer's edition, let's try giving away the laptop edition next time" - or at least let people who can already download the Dev edition get the Laptop edition too (the ISO).

You will get almost all versions free except the one available to insiders. You also have to pay for using CNR.

I later did find a coupon for the Laptop Edition of 4.5 (released Feb 18th, I think) - and it works great on my laptop computer overall. Only problem so far is lack of detection/support for a LinkSys WPC11 version 4 wireless 802.11b PCMCIA card - but I did see on Lindows.com that version 3 is supported if you do some command line tricks - so it might work with version 4 of the card too. However, I still think they should more easily give free/promotional copies of the Laptop Edition away just like the Developer's Edition.

I have 4.5.280 Laptop Edition on my Dell Inspiron 5100. So far I've tried three wireless cards without success. A fellow on the Lindows Forums suggested the following:
LOS LE 4.5.261 and a Belkin F5D6020 PCMCIA 802.11b wifi card
I'll let you know if it works. I found it on Ebay for $26 with shipping. I like my Lindows setup, but finding a wifi that would "just work" has kind of ticked me off.

I found this on Lindows.com tonight:
---------
How do I make my Linksys WPC11 Ver 3 wireless card work?
Answer
This tip is recommended for advanced users of LindowsOS.
This tip comes from the Community Forum and has worked for some users.
To make your wireless card work:
1. Power up the notebook.
2. Once LindowsOS boots, insert the WPC11. You will likely get a high-beep/low-beep, indicating that the card was not recognized.
3. Open a console. Go to L, Programs, Utilities, Console.
4. At the '#' prompt, type "/sbin/cardctl ident"
Look for manfid: 0x..., 0x... (take note of these addresses). It should appear in the 'Instant Wireless Network PC Card' information.
Go to L, then Run Command. At the text area, type "kate /etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf". This will open the kate editor, type the following lines:
device "orinoco_cs"
class "network"
module "hermes", "orinoco", "orinoco_cs"
# LinkSys WPC11
card "Instant Wireless Network PC Card"
manfid 0x0274, 0x1612 #substitute your addresses from step 4 here
bind "orinoco_cs"
5. Restart pcmcia services:
At the '#' prompt, type "/etc/init.d/pcmcia restart"
You should now hear two high-beeps as the system recognizes your card.
---------------
Will test it with version 4 of the same card.
