I´m running lindows/linspire 4.5 . all I can work from is the command line.Think someone zapped me at another forum. Don´t
know how to repair my gui or access it. Anyone know?
if I didn't know better it looks awful trojan like. Now I can't even get the boot to complete to
command line stage. I tried to update to linspire 5.0 and it doesn't even recognize any data on the hard drive. fortunately knoppix does, but I can't seem to burn my data to a disk in knoppix.
Give us the text output when you type startx and we should be able to help you.. Did you by chance change your run level? That could explain the not being able to even get to the command line.
I'm just going to transfer my data off the hard drive and install mepis , I like mepis so far very much.
I can finally install other proggies rather than pay the yearly fee.!!
This looks like a troll post.
Making claims that you got a trojan by using Linspire?!?
Not willing to troubleshoot?!?
Advertising another distro to use in place of?!?
Hey linuxforlife , From my standpoint trobleshooting Lindows seems
like roasting my nads over a long slow open fire whereas installing mepis was
nearly painfree and quick . I couldn't even upgrade install with linspire 5.0 as it didn't recognize any partitions on the hard drive ,yet mepis did. That's as real as I can get. Alltogether so far I 'm glad lindows f'd up
so I could find something better.
What distro do you use by the way?
I think you are right about the troll, linuxforlife.
If anyone else seriously has this problem, I would suggest whichever version of Linspire they are using, the boot menu gives an option of "redetect" which frequently fixes oddball system problems as well as looking after a major hardware change (like putting the HDD into another computer)
Up to 4.5, the boot manager is LiLo.
Ver 5 onwards is Grubb.
I've used that method countless times.
And I think that the command for starting the GUI is actually KDM, rather than startx. Never used it except a long time ago, but seem to remember reading about that somewhere.
Oh and if mccar is using Lindows 4.5, it's from a CD that would have been created 18 months ago - unless it's an illegal burn of a copyrighted CD from back then.
But I believe once there is a new version out (ie two versions in this case, Linspire 4.5 had a number of significant changes over Lindows 4.5 by the time the last version was released) I read that the old version (like SuSE) is public domain. But I might be wrong, have been before, lol.
Re burning in Knoppix. I seem to remember needing to do it in a SuSE live distro the only time I tried; I could not get K3B to work in Knoppix, 3.3 or 3.4.
Of course if he was serious, he could save his home directory using a live CD that has qt-parted on to create a new partition. Then he could take 10 minutes (maybe 15 maximum) to reinstall the OS. One of the promoted attractions of Linspire is its extremely fast installation. Doing both of those operations would be far faster than installing a new OS over the top and losing all his data.

Thanks eagles lair , at least some help instead of pointless criticism.
Redetect did not fix anything and I did it multiple times. Like I said
can't even get to command line anymore it just freezes in mid boot.
If I save home directory will this keep all my old cnr programs as I am
not a member.
