Lindows

I just got the lindows cd from a friend
and i tried to install it
but it told me, that it'll take over my whole HDD, but I don't want that, I already made a partition to install it, wouldn't it let me select which partition I wanna install it on?

will lindows be updated through the internet to become linspire or I will have to buy linspire?

how did you create a partition? You have to create a linux partition. FAT or NTFS are not acceptable filesystems.

Lebanese Forces - Sounds like you have on old version of Lindows (current version is Linspire 5.0) which might not have install options you're looking for.

Linspire 5.0 will ask you how/where to install. There are some other posts on how to get Linspire 5.0 or the Live CD free.
Good Luck

It SHOULD ask you where you want to install! I wouldn't suggest starting with a NTFS partition tho! They actually recommend that it be a fat32 partition for some odd reason....
You may have to pick ADVANCED INSTALL to get the option to choose where to install. Which version is this anyway?

Actually last time I checked the Linspire installer worked best if the target partition was FAT (FAT32)
AFAIK NTFS doesn't work and ext2 and ext3 might but I believe there were some bugs in the installer (don't know if it's fixed now).

Anyways IF you want to install to a partition and don't do a take-over install of the harddrive you should select the "Advanced" installation since the default "standard" installation method doesn't include the partition selector (and the whole installer doesn't include a partitioning tool eighter).

Good Luck!

The reason is not odd. Writing NTFS partitions using the NTFS driver availible in the Linux kernel is notoriously unsafe. The kernel currently only safely supports mounting NTFS partitions read only..

Im sorry. I think you misunderstood my post or the original poster, lebanese forces. We discussing what type of partition to create to be the actual install partition.

Lebanese forces said:
"when I installed linux last time, I created an NTFS partition"

I stated:
"I wouldn't suggest starting with a NTFS partition tho! They actually recommend that it be a fat32 partition for some odd reason...."

I suggested it NOT be NTFS and that for some odd reason L recommends the install partition to be a fat32 partition. That would have nothing to do with read/write of a ntfs partition. Do you know of a lot of linux distros that recommend the install partition to be fat32? If they dont then it would be odd or unusual wouldn't it?

These kinds of posts have no place in a thread. If you have a question or comment for a moderator send them a e-mail. If your post has nothing to do with the tread then don't bother with it.

Thanks.

As long as you are able to post to LQ, you aren't banned. Once banned, your posting rights are revoked.

Thank you for clarifying! I assue you it wont happen again! The reason I had to ask is that I use certain "technology" to be anonymous and often even though I am technically "blocked/banned" it is not effective and I am not aware of it.

I had sent a email and receieved no response so I was afraid that I WAS blocked and being blocked my email was discarded. Once again I am off-topic but thought I should clarify! As I said it wont happen again!
