Installation problems
Hi,
I am having major issues getting Linspire 4.5 to load. When I put the disk into the CD ROM, it boots and goes to the Install or Run Diagnostics screen. If I select Install, the screen changes to Please wait and it never continues beyond that point. I have ran the checksum on the download and it is correct. I used Bit Tornado to download it. I burned it at 8X speed since it recommended I burn it at a lower speed. I also burned it at 48X and had the same result. Any ideas?
My PC is an HP DX2000 and it has 1 GB of RAM, 3.0GHZ P4 processor with Hyperthreading, a built in ATI video card. Pretty basic really and certainly fast enough to run Linspire. Anybody have any ideas?

I've always burned ISOs at 1x or 2x and I know many other people who do likewise.
Worth a try. Bad burn is usually the reason for this problem with Linspire, or its predecessor Lindows.
What happens if you try running diagnostics?

If I try to run diagnostics, it runs to a point and then dies. I've never really had any problems with ISOs in the past. I have burned at least a dozen different versions of Mandrake and Red Hat and have never had an issue with it. I can try it at 1x and see what happens. I am not sure what else to try. Is this something that happens a lot with Linspire?

I have read about it in the www.linspire.com forums. I don't have any fast burners myself... both are old, one runs at 2x maximum, the other at 4x lol!
Wonder if the problem is with your HDD?
Generally IDE drives seem to be okay; I have read that SATA don't work with the current version of Linspire, and that there can be problems with SCSI, but have no hands-on experience of either. The problems might be associated with the kernel, from what I've read.
Have you tried running the Live CD version of the OS? That might give you a clue, because if it doesn't see the HDD, it would suggest there lies your problem.
Apart from that, I can't offer any suggestions.

Ahhh. My silly unthinking suggestion. I had for a moment thought you had the box where they throw in a LiveCD for interest and testing.
Any Linux LiveCD distro would probably work, like Knoppix or SuSE etc... but you can download the live CD from this address...
ummmmm it doesn't work anymore... they rebuilt the website about 2 months ago
You need a "MyLinspire" account which is free.
Once you have that set up, click on "MyProducts" and then take the link which says CD Downloads
You may be able to directly access this page at http://shop.linspire.com/shopping/sh...hp?dlobjid=114
I just did by logging out and then going direct to the page

I have an account and that is where I got the ISO. I will look for the LIve CD version. CAn I install from a LiveCD?
By the way, I burnt another CD at 4x which is as low as my CD-ROM goes and as low as Nero 5 will let me go. Same result. Installation hangs.

hmmmm doesn't sound good.
The live does not have the ability to install, but it is very useful for checking if hardware will support an installation. Thats what most people use it for.
It can also be used to demo the OS to someone interested. But it runs slower than an installed version because the speed of the CD drive is far slower than that of a HDD.
But it is certainly useable... I have submitted beta testing reports from new versions of the live CD before now.
The only thing is that you cannot create a permanent home directory you can save into because a CD is read-only by definition.
Please let me know how you go.

I just checked my.linspire and all that is available to me is the iso and FireFox. I guess I am not going to be able to test Linspire unless I go and buy it. Thanks for all of your help! I really appreciate your time and effort.

the download of LinspireLiveCD is free to all, in actual fact. The link that worked before they rebuilt the website a couple of months ago doesn't work either.
I will investigate but it could take a day or two.
In the meanwhile try this link off the linspire.com forums...
