Freespire ALSA upgrade?!?

Hello.

I'm new to FreeSpire/Debian and I just wanted a user friendly desktop version. I was happy with Archlinux, but for another person, I wanted more friendly linux, and as I tried FreeSpire, I liked it very much. It's really easy to support, and the startup logic is clear, everything was ok, but ... it doesn't recognize my sound card (nVidia MCP51 AC97 Audio (Integrated)). :-(

So I read somewhere, that this card is supported in newer ALSA (>=1.0.11), so I decided to upgrade my alsa to the 1.0.12 version. But here my knowledge lacks a lot.

- I knew not if I have to build only alsa-driver, or I have to update other packages too.
- I do not know what I have to change in freespire's alsa 1.0.9 source code (maybe all without the debian folder)
- I cannot understand what is patched in freespire's version, and why I haven't version.h in kernel sources? (or maybe I'm wrong)

If anyone could help me for upgrading alsa modules to the latest version with the standart kernel, please let him wrote me a mail. Thank you in advance.

Did you first try instead of modular install on the Konsole
# sudo alsaconf
and choose AC97 instead of Legacy
# sudo alsactl store
And immediately afterwards, to save the settings permanently.
If alsactl does'nt work then. inside configuration panel applet jack/ advanced/ advanced settings/ material, try automatic detection
BTW, under users if the root acount is disabled, untick the disable box.

whk, thanks for the answer, but I solved my problem ... just changed freespire

I do not understand ALSA and JACK architecture, and that's why I try not to play with them much, but ... the driver that have to control the device (intel8x0) does not even recognize it (not a row in dmesg), and I just have not /dev/dsp.

After some days fighting, I found other things that I don't like ... and so I resolved my problems generally - just downloaded Archlinux, and now all is working like a charm.

Thanks again for your reply. I'll read some more for alsaconf (and architecture), as well as JACK's.
