Error 219. Error running jifyboot during installation

I tried several times to install Linspire but at 90% of installation I get the message

"Error 219. Error running jiffyboot..."

This problem is already discussed in other forums :
http://forum.openlindows.com/
and
https://forum.linspire.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?Cat=

But the solutions proposed there didn't work for me (I tried to install from two different CD drives, etc...). Also, I found one post saying that when this error occurs, the system is installed, only the boot loader is missing (good new !) and that we can boot Linspire from another Linux installation by adapting its "lilo.conf". In fact for me, the system was not completely installed....

Any other ideas ?

Thanks

Same here

I've got the same problem and lilo will not even install after adding the Linspire partition (using liloconfig, slackware).
Can't find anything about this at the links you specified though!
Your message is the only thing google comes up with on this subject.
Could you specify in more detail where you found the other posts on this subject?
Thank you.

Unfortunately these two forums are not as well organized as the LinuxQuestions one. I remember that it was not obvious to find posts related to "error 219". I have tried again during five minuts, I found nothing. Anyway, there is nothing really useful in these two forums concerning our problem. Two solutions were reported: 1- changing the CD drive and re-install 2- install on a fat32 partition instead of a reiserfs one. One post reported that this problem was specific to a given build, previous versions/builds could be installed on the same computer. That's all.

The version I tried to install was the one offered for download some months ago (build 289 if I remember well), maybe with the version offered at that time via bitorrent, this problem disappears (I have not tried because I cannot use bitorrent). Maybe it is too late.

crappy os

I've got the bittorrent version (4.5.439), installed it again, now to a full harddisk. It installed to 100% however it never asked where to put its bootloader so i later on discovered that it was on the mbr oh hda. Now Winxp won't boot anymore. I entered linspire's location into liloconfig but it didn't boot, kernel panic; no init found.
Installed XP again suddenly its on a partition called hda5 (i only have 2 partitions on hda) strange things are happening around here (ok, probably has nothing to do with our problem :)). Anyway i lost a bit of my enthusiasm after "the easy os" just stopped installing on an old laptop which before ran slack 9.1 flawlessly. My slackware was a lot easier (or should i say "a lot less frustrating") even for a newbie like myself.
Oh and by the way you should somewhere on disk three (i think) of your mandrake 9.2 have a nice graphical bittorrent client or isn't that your "bittorrent problem"?
Cu.

A few comments.

I don't follow. You said that you installed it on a full HD but say also that XP will not boot any more which suggests that you have two partitions.... Do you mean that installing in a different partition / HD solved the problem "error 219" ?

I installed Lindows 2 or 3 months ago on an other computer, there were no problem about dual boot. However, it is recommended to apply a 'chmod a-x jiffyboot' as soon as you boot properly XP and Linspire because otherwise jiffyboot will rewrite the boot loader any times you boot Linspire, this is especially interesting if you have another Linux.

hda1 / hda5 doesn't mean that you have more than two partitions, it comes from Linux numbering of principal/extended-logical partitions.

If you installed XP again after Linspire, how can you boot Linspire now ? In principle you have to isntall XP before Linspire.

(I can't use bitorrent because at home I have a standard slow modem, at work, where I download large files, there is a firewall that I cannot configure myself to enable bitorrent).

I have 3 hard drives, that’s why. I installed linspire onto the full third hd, this solved the 219 problem indeed. But then messed up something on the first (winxp) disk because when i choose to boot from my first harddisk i get "02 02 02 02 02 02"etc... This is strange because i would expect that this thing that messed it up would be the linspire boot loader and it would point to the third hard drive when booting from the first. I tried to boot the first and the third hd by altering the bios boot order and by pointing lilo to the third harddrive. Nothing worked. Does linspire automatically install its boot loader into the mbr of hda?
I used to choose between Linux and windows using the bios but it now works with lilo, i think because i now installed xp on a fat32 partition.
I didn't know about this hda5 thing, must have misclicked somewhere in partition magic... thanks.
Ok, i'm quite a newbie so forgive me my sometimes very obvious answers and questions...
Oh and i've reinstalled xp quite some times now, do you have an easy way of restoring the mbr?

Thanks a lot

Boot with your Windows XP installation CD, choose repair and try 'fixboot' if it doesn't work, try 'fixmbr' (but in this case read carefully possible warnings). In any cases you can boot XP with the floppy disk as explained in http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/ntboot/ .

But I don't know how you will be able to boot Linspire after that, unless you still have your Slackware.

The only way I ever solved it was by giving linspire a full disk and not just a partition. But after that it still didn't boot even though it said the install was succesful.

Sorry, can't help you any further!

But since you are new to linux I can give you some advice....

Linspire uses a package system (software install system) for which you have to pay, it is suposed to be very easy but I've never been able to try it. If you want an easy to install linux with lots of option that you don't have to think about if you don't want to I would suggest downloading Mandrake or Redhat linux (or maybe suse is also easy?) (look at www.linuxiso.org for more info!). I think the installing method is just as nice and you can do more with it. For example with linspire you are stuck to KDE as a graphical environment. With both redhat and mandrake you have a very complete system and if you want extra software the .rpm packages are the most easy ones to find and they are for free (you can find almost anything at www.sourceforge.net but if download the cd's I can't imagine that you need more than those if you are just starting)

If you already knew about all this and you still want linspire just ignore my little story :)

Ok, goodluck and have fun with Linux!

Cu around!

I started this thread several months ago. A couldn't fix the problem.
Now I use other Linux distributions.

For newbies, Mandrake is almost as simple as Linspire...
