Drivers for Linspire

Hi:
I have Linspire running on a Dell Inspiron 8500 notebook and I am having troubles with some drivers. Before I installed Linspire, I took the C:/Dell/Drivers folder off of the Machine while Windows was still on it. I just put them in the directory /Dell/Drivers for now. The problem is, I am not quite sure how to get the drivers to work. The inf files are there, I am just not sure how to make Linspire find them cuz most of my Hardware is not in the tested list at Linspire's site. I looked on the manufacturer's website for the hardware and they only distribue drivers in exe format.

Has anyone had any experience manually installing Drivers with Debian before? I have speakers on my Dell Laptop docking station, a Proxim 802.11MB Wireless card, and an Epson Perfection 1660 Photo Scanner that all need driver installs.

Any sort of guidance would be helpful.

Thanks

The drivers that you copied are for windows. It's possible that you may need the wireless windows driver if you need to use ndiswrapper.

What is normally important to determine which linux driver you need is the controller chip a device uses and sometimes how the device connects. You can use the "lspci -v" command to get the necessary information. The same wireless card model could possibly be manufactured using different controllers, so you need to determine the controller used. This site has a HCL that you might want to refer to . Also, this site's wiki has a wireless section that might help also.

Googling, on the web, I found this web page which may help you set up SANE for your scanner.

Thanks:
I got SANE up and running and it works fine. For the wireless portion, I simply went to Linspire's site, found a supported wireless card, ebayed it, and now thats running fine. The only issue I have now are those docking station speakers. Whenever I have the laptop docked in, I don't get any sound out of the speakers. Has anyone come across any good tutorials out there that can help set up drivers for things like this? I Googled this topic and all I could find is some guy on the Linspire Forum complaining how there is no automatic support for it. So it looks like I'll have to do it the hard way.

Thanks in Advance:
