can't run as root

I installed Freespire on a friends computer and was surprised when it did not set a root password. At the same time, I have to be a 'super user' to install programs. What do I do?

That stuff has happened to me with both Ubuntu and Knoppix (or atleast, no password that I could figure out, unless it was 'toor').
In either case, until I managed to get a password installed, I just used SUDO.

sudo won't work. See, I needed to use the command "dpkg -i %s" and it said I needed to be root.

See, the instructions said to right-click on the deb file and select open with. Then type dpkg -i %s. Would it work to type "sudo dpkg -i %s"? I am not sure if I tried that, but it may work.

Doesn't Linspire always run as root, or has that been changed?

Dunno. Told I had to be 'superuser'. BTW-its Freespire. There isn't a difference in the way it operates is there? Just its software?

user mentioned freespire, which uses sudo instead of linspire, which uses root.
You can enable root login in freespire (go to their forum).

Furthermore, I am running freespire in one pentium 4 and yes, you can do sudo apt-get commands.

Cheers.
