Hey there..
can you post the errors that come up when you run apt-get. That would help. Also check that you are running apt-get as root and not as a normal user.

GUI?
Doesn't it have a front-end gui for apt-get, such as kpackage or synaptic? Look around under your main menu....
If you have apt-get installed....try looking at the man page "man apt-get"....I don't think you need to run apt-setup...when I installed an rpm for apt-get (under Fedora), I needed to download a standard sources list from the internet (google for "apt.conf"....or just plain "apt-get" will probably give you some good reading material). Once you have that, edit it to your liking....then you just run apt-get update, then apt-get upgrade.

I believe, in Lindows OS 4.5 you need to only do an apt-get update after creating you apt sources list.

There may be another way but I've been running apt-get from the console. Click on the "L" start menu, click on "run," type in "konsole" and you'll be at a console screen with a command prompt. Type in "su" to become super user if you're not already running as root/administrator. The type "apt-get update" to update apt-get's list of available applications and download sites. That should be all you need to do since apt-get is part of Linspire 4.5 and already installed. At least it was for me.
You might also investigate dpkg and wget which are also fine download/install tools packaged with Linspire. (Well, actually I think they're Debian tools but they're in the Linspire distro.) I just learned about them last week myself.

Whatever you do, do NOT do this. I realize you are trying to help Brolin, but apt-get will ruin his/her machine. For more information on this, please do a forum search over there for apt-get related articles, and the horror stories that are the realization of using apt-get.

Simple answer is that you generally should not use apt-get. Use CNR or 3rd party CNR packages (no need for subscription and also installs with "one click"). Autopackage might also be an option in the future if it gets more widespread.
If there is any certain software you need but can't find in CNR, just post here and I'll try to help you!

Thanks. I appreciate the warning. I've been blythely using apt-get, experimenting with it, and not realizing the risk. Well, I did make the mistake once (only once) of trying "apt-get upgrade". That did break Lindows and I had to break down and buy a current version install CD to fix it. But I my highly computer and Linux knowledgeable brother just broke his Mandrake box by "upgrading" to Mandrake 10 so I thought such things were just part of the Linux experience.
I've been using apt-get (and recently dpkg) in Lindows because the stuff offered at Click-n-Run is often one or two versions behind that offered on the developer's website. Opera is one good example. Click-n-Run installed v7.1 on my machines but I couldn't download new skins because they all expected v7.50 and I couldn't get that version with Click-n-Run. So I downloaded the Debian QT version from the Opera website and installed it using dpkg.
I'll be a bit more careful in the future about using apt-get and dpkg. I'll at least use the -s option first to make sure I'm not destroying any Lindows packages.

With 4.0, the version I got, everything worked nicely. It was after that version that I really started to begin to question the LInspire experience.
I will try 5.0 on another machine when it comes out, but will not keep it if it is decidely the same ol 4.5 with some more graphical goods.

Linspire 5.0 is under testing and there is no release plan for it yet. If I had to make a personal estimate I would say late July. Insiders might start getting early versions of 5.0 this coming week.

I got this from a japanese Linspire site..
--
First, modify your /etc/apt/sources.list by:
1. Uncommenting the 2 lines (Adventurous)
Code:
Deb ftp: //ftp.us.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib non-free
Deb ftp: //non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US sarge/non-US main contrib non-free
and add this:
Code:
Deb http: //security.debian.org/ testing/updates main
OR
2. Add these 3 lines: (Safer)
Code:
Deb http: //security.debian.org/ stable/updates main
Deb ftp: //ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
Deb ftp: //non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free
--
After that, go to konsole and type
After the update, type
Code:
apt-get install synaptic
This'll install SynAPTic for you..
If you wanna upgrade your system (for advanced users):
If no errors come out... then:
.... Some of my instructions MIGHT be wrong.. I haven't test the upgrade option using stable yet...
But as far as I know.. apt-get upgrade using the sarge mirror will kill your Linspire...
And apt-get install tuxracer using sarge will kill Linspire too..
By the way, I'm a

.. So don't expect everything to work =P
