The screenshots look very XP-ish. We don't really need to ape M$.

I've been looking through there screenshots and am somewhat confused about what this product is intended to be. It appears to set itself out (on it's apparently well designed website) as a slick business distribution, yet looking at the screenshots we are presented with something that doesn't even appear to suggest it's not mimicing XP as much as possible (breach of copyright anyone?). In contrary to this attempt at looking like XP, it is clear that the theme that has ben set as a default has not even been finished to any commerical level. The vertical scrollbars just stop instantly, the corners of frames have clearly broken lines, the maximize / minimize / close buttons don't even have the consistent background of the title bars, the unfocused title bars are illegible. personally i've not seen a GPLed theme on freshmeat as bitty as this, yet this is apparently a streamlined buisness desktop? I'd be grateful if any representatives from Linare could confirm my hopes that these are screenshots from a very early beta release, which have just not yet been updated. I have no idea what it's like to actually use, but first impressions don't look good.

Ita s special distro designed with subliminal messaging in mind by Microsoft. Their goal is to get you accustomed to the XP look and feel if are not already. By doing so you can migrate to Windows XP with this distro with greater ease.

I think differently to you all in that case. I think in many ways it is good for some distros to be virtual clones of Windows. You can't deny that a newbie trying out this distro is going to feel more at home than with say Slackware. Mandrake may not be everyone's cup-of-tea but after giving it a go I realised that Linux had a chance of prising ( <- is that a real word) users away from Windows. If you stuck the average XP users in front of Debian with Afterstep as Xwindows' window manager I think you would put them off, but stick them in front of this and they'll be penguinated in no time.

I was looking at the features....
"Linare comes with Kmail, the increasingly popular Outlook-style email program."
I didn't think Kmail was very Outlook-style... I thought Evolution was, but not kmail. |
On the amazon.com site there are a few reviews. Not enough to form a full opinion, but generally they are positive.
With that price, they'd have to be: reportedly USD 199!. Pretty hard to believe! Even for 1.3G Duron, that's amazing. But it also includes speakers! That is most definitely not a business price, |
Few screenshots were from the beta release. We are not trying to mimic XP at all in any case.
We will definitely correct any issues in the future and we always need yoru valuable comments and feedback. We will soon provide the latest version iso to the commnuity so interested people can download it. |

Kinda does have an XP look to it. It doesn't really seem to be intended for hardcore Linux user's. It does seem to encourage MS users to at least try Linux though.

A man is browsing around a pet shop and comes across a parrot.
"well I suppose may be able to talk, little fellow?" to which the parrot answers, "and I suppose you're able to fly, skit for brains?" The morale being, just because you can mimic doesn't mean you have to be defeated by gravity like a dumb human. (idea is that linux is like flying, while with XP you keep falling) |
I don't know Linare's opinion on giving away their software, but I am a freelance tech writer with connections to several high traffic websites that would want to publish a review of Linare it if I were to get my hands on a copy. I would use it only for the purposes of review, and it would off my computer within a week of publication.

Tarential - If you "don't know Linare's opinion on giving away their software", maybe you should just contact them. Your intentions may be legit but as a member since Feb 2003, you should know that advertising is not permitted in the forums. Your post clearly seems to be a job solicitation, and thus has been reported. If you are interested in publishing a review of Linare, and/or obtaining a copy of their software, my recommendation would be for you to contact them directly. As a journalist you should know that. -- J.W. |
