Browser doesn't "see" dial-up connection

I received the evaluation copy [$6.95] of Linare and installed it in a breeze. I added my ISP information and settings to the Internet dial-up tool.

After I connected to my ISP, I opened one of the browsers, Mozilla. Aside from the Linare page, I was unable to navigate anywhere else. Attempts to reach common web pages such as Yahoo and Google were met with an error message, something like "Unknown Host."

I also tried the Konqueror browser with the same result.

I suspect the browsers are not "seeing" the dial-up connection, and I have no idea why. I have used this connections etup with several other flavors of Linux, such as Mepis and Lindows.

Anyone know why this is happening and how to fix?

Other tha that, Linare looks great!

POSSIBLE CAUSE 1 : DNS IN KPPP

I had the same problem numerous times. It seems to originate from KPPP on a RedHat/Fedora box. Normally, a RedHat box dial-up configuration is made through the redhat-config-network utility (the one that configures your ethernet networking for instance). When configuring dial-up using KPPP (which is what you do under Linare), KPPP seems to be unable to correctly register the DNS addresses. Therefore you always get "Unkown hosts".

Now, the solution is simple. Edit your dial-up settings. Go to the DNS tab. Select manual. Add your ISP DNS server address(es) usually one or two. That's it!

POSSIBLE CAUSE 2 : DNS IN ETHERNET CONNECTION

The other trouble I had was with my ethernet connection. By default it is auto-configured with DHCP on a wireless router. Which provides it with (invalid) DNS addresses. Now these invalid DNS addresses are used by KPPP, and the router is used as default gateway no matter how I set KPPP.

The solution was to configure my Ethernet connection with a static IP address.

I hope that this helps!
