Use hdparm to check and enable/disable dma
#hdparm /dev/hdc
will give statistics on /dev/hdc and tells you if its using dma
#hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc
will enable dma on /dev/hdc

You should add Marillat's repository. He specializes in audio video applications and gets the newest ones ready before Debian does.
You can replace unstable with testing or stable, or use multipals.
##Marillat's NON-FREE repository
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main

still getting the choppy motion playing xine in libranet. sound is okay. i installed libdvdcss2 to get the player working. it seems awfully slow getting started too. dma is enabled. not sure what the problem is. should i try another dvd play-using creative labs dvd player, maybe uncompatible hardware?

Have you tried other players? Some people have the same problems as you, but mplayer or ogle work fine for them. I saw that a new version of libxine is in unstable, so perhaps this has been fixed, but try the other players first and see if it is a hardware or software problem.
