updating libranet uninstalls gnome and a lot more

i have tried a couple of times to change my sources to both testing and unstable and do a upgrade and dist-upgrade. Everytime i do it it completely ruins libranet. the login screen is gone. gnome is uninstalled when mozilla firebird is installed. Libranet seemed nice at first, but it is nearly impossible to upgrade it

Try just installing gnome-core from unstable and that should install/upgrade most of gnome so that is does not remove things. I am pinning sid and was able to upgrade gnome to 2.4 with this. Although I had to force gnome-control-center to install becuase it wanted to install a pixmap that gnome-core installed also.
