Switching GDM

How would I switch to XDM? On my laptop could I just come up to a console and from there boot into a lightweight DE/WM if need to? Could I just skip GDM/KDM/XDM at that point?

You can run without a display manager. You just need to make a config file in your home directory. After you are logged into the console you can type startx.

Adminmenu will allow you to disable GDM.
