Re: PCMCIA for laptop
2.8.1 what?
and what do you want the PCMCIA card to do? Networking?
I would suggest you check out this page
http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/
there is a link there to all the supported cards.
Regards
Jo

Thanks, Jo. Libranet 2.8.1. Need the modem to connect to the Internet. Checked the sourceforge link before posting here and was hoping that someone could give me a brand name that worked for them.

Cybergal,
it seems that a lot of 1571's came with a factory supplied compaq modem? I don't know if this is true in your case?
I've never had to use a modem under linux, but I think the important thing is to get a genuine hardware modem (i.e. not a Winmodem).
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Cheers
Jo

Thanks, Jo. The Compaqs come with a Winmodem, in mine it is a Compaq Armada 1500 Series 560CL, which is not on the list of supported modems for Linux. I've also tried http://www.linmodems.org/ as some Winmodems can be used on Linux. I'll phone the computer shop and see what they can do for me.

The Zoom PCMCIA 56k Modem works great. They support Linux too.
It's basically plug and play if your kernel supports PCMCIA and you have the tools installed.
Look at your systems log file when you plug it in and you will see the device name.
Mar 8 12:47:10 localhost kernel: ttyS6 at I/O 0x2e8 (irq = 7) is a 16550A
You may find that a link is created when you insert the card that will link it to /dev/modem

Thanks, David. I've emailed the computer store to see if they have Zoom or can order it for me. The spec sheet for Libranet 2.8.1 mentions that many internal and most external modems are supported. Zoom is not mentioned at sourceforge but, as mentioned there, it is not a complete list.

Your welcome,
I have yet to find a PCMCIA modem that did not work. I have some older ones ranging from 28k to 56k and they all work.

Thanks, again, David. Decided to go with a US Robotics external modem as computer shop couldn't get the Zoom. Modem to be in shop today.
