Libranet 2.8.1 trial download
Hi Tal,
does this mean there is now a Libranet 3.xx available? I would go for it! Regards Juergen |
Libranet 3.0 is still in development. We are working to make 3.0 the best Libranet ever.

will it ever b free??
|
Will it be simple to upgrade from a customised 2.8.1 ?
|
"will it ever b free??"
Following the Libranet tradition (and I DON'T know this for a fact) 2.8.1 will probably be the freely available version after 3.0 is released. But why would you want it to be free? It's already cheap as heck (well it's not $10, but...). Try out 2.8.1, if ya like it, pay up, those tools aren't free and those devs can't support their families for free. Only in linux and cellphones do people want everything for free. Gimme a free distro, gimme a free phone. Do you get a free car at the dealership? Do you get free gas at the station, free food at the grocery store? We are lucky so much is free about linux and should support those parts that are not free happily with our wallets. Don't give me the I'm a student crap, forgo your weekend drinking or movie for a month and you'll have the cash. If you do want free there are completely free distros out there, if you want this one over all the others there must be something of value there. Sorry for the rant, it's really my disgust that non-free software can't seem to survive in Linux (at least in a non-commercial environment, gaming for example). |
I'm a slackware user, and i've tried Libranet Linux 2.8.1.
Wow, what a beautiful distribution ! 1 - Very fast, The system boots in 30 seconds on my (old) PIII 450 Mhz and various applications start up in few seconds, it's slightly faster than slackware, very faster than mandrake. 2- Absolutely stable 3- Adminmenu is very simple and clear, installation of software via internet is very comfortable 4 - There is a large collection of software included, especially little and fast programs (ie : there is Evolution BUT there is Sylpheed also, i love Sylpheed...) So i think that Libranet is a very useful Linux desktop system, a good mean point between ease of use and performances of the system. Thank you tal@libranet for your great work! |
I'm running Libranet 2.7 as a Linux newbie -- I chose it after reading some forum messages and a couple of reviews. They said it wasn't bloated, was easy to install but didn't spoonfeed you -- exactly what I was looking for.
I've been learning a lot having to update quite a number of apps -- through apt-get, dpkg, installing tar.gz files, etc-- and removing some stuff as well, like KDE and gnome-desktop. I've loved it from the first -- so I'm geared now for the next installation of Libranet 2.8.1 -- is it so fast then ? -- Libranet classic is rather slow on my 64MB ram (at least some apps are like OOo). Cheers, |

I've run two Libranet update-safe archive procedures this week and they have worked out beautifully on my main system. I updated the laptop last night and it worked equally well. I really recommend this software, you can get it at http://www.libranet.com/trial_download.html. Tal, I can't wait until you and Jon have the software ready to go. I want to help you promote what you have today and help you test what you're working on when it's ready to Beta test! |
