install of orinoco silver not working

Aloha-
I am trying to get my Orinoco silver card to work on my laptop and not having to much success. I inserted my card before booting and boot the laptop. Dmesg sees the card, but the led's on the card are not on. So I did the following :
ifconfig eth1 up
iwconfig eth1 essid "name of the network"
dhcpcd eth1 (does not work)
pump (inplace of dhcpcd)
pump failed so now what should I do ?

Can you manually edit the text file settings in /etc/pcmcia rather than with iwconfig.
Have you tried any nice GUI frontends which might make the process simpler to see what is going on?

To be honest though, I have never had a problem with this specific WLAN card -and have got all the other ones (Lucent/Orinocco/Avaya) to work. I just plug it in, edit the wireless config file (essid, infrastructure, DHCP etc. etc.), restart and it just works.
