clock problem fixed in MEPIS 2004.06....i don't know what the problem was but it's gone
still no 3d acceleration though....I may upgrade to Xorg and try the same thing I did with Mandrake, that seemed to be the lynchpin

ok, the clock problem resurfaced in MEPIS. I will return to Libranet. It has been the most stable and easiest to configure.

what version is it that it resurfaced in? (Just out of curiosity) I'm back on standard Debian (testing) and have got it configured to the point where it works just as good (no better) then what Mepis was for me (no clock problems here, even after a suspend to disk and resume)

I noticed it on MEPIS 3.3 so I went back to 2004.6 noticed after several days that the clock was slow again. Oh well, I prefer Libranet anyway. It is completely compatible with everything from the Debian repositories where MEPIS requires their repositories be included in the apt sources.list otherwise the distro breaks during upgrades. Libranet 2.8.1 is great once you get it upgraded to current packages (it's a bit old). Libranet 3.0 is going to be released soon. Everything I routinely used on MEPIS works better on Libranet, too. I got my printer working through a windows workgroup at home, too. Could never get that with any other distro. Still don't have 3d acceleration working with this stupid 340m though. Someday maybe I'll get around to trying to install xorg and see if that helps. I'll post here.

Well, I found the distro that gives me 3d acceleration for my ATI Radeon IGP 340m.....Libranet 3.0.....out of the "box" automatically configured, no extra driver needed...it just works... I just played TuxRacer to check it out....perfect

It's not bleeding edge, but it's as up to date as Sarge, which isn't too bad. Uses the 2.6.11 kernel instead of 2.6.9 that Sarge uses (it may be 2.6.8). KDE 3.3.2 and Gnome 2.8.something (not a Gnome user) and xorg instead of xfree, that's the kicker for the 3d acceleration.
As for cost, I didn't think $65 (registered prior user price) was unreasonable for a rock solid distro. I was always pleased with Libranet 2.8.1 so I decided to pony up for 3.0 and I'm glad I did. They took all the good things about 2.8.1 (after upgrading the ancient packages) and made them better.

last time I tried the distro they were giving away d/l, I think in order to get users to give up the $ for the new version coming out, and that was when the packages were very ancient. as for update cycles/new releases, just seems to long in between for my taste.

Away from my Linux box right now, but apparently it also works with the latest Ubuntu. See here
I'm downloading it to give it a try now...I'll post here my results. It's actually the Ubuntu xorg that Libranet uses, so it will be no surprise to me if it works.
Oh, it's the ati driver.

k I was fiddling around with it the other day (xorg) that is and noticed something about the ubut being mentiond when I did a startx or xorg from cli without gdm running so I played around with the config and d/l and installed tuxracer (new name btw) and low and behold it worked so I installed 3ddesktop and that worked next trial is blender and if that works I'm gonna just say the heck with it and declare that I now have 3d acceleration working ;-) no point in not being thourough huh?

if it works in what you use then that's good enough...I only needed it for tuxracer and flight gear anyway...maybe I'll check out some other stuff along the way...what's this 3ddesktop?
Edit: Just installed 3ddesktop...pretty cool
