JDS Linux Software
I am posting this news letter to let you all know that after we had a slow start we had a successful month last month with over 4000 downloads.
Gcclinux.com is continuously working hard to provide the best support and the latest software to all JDS users and the community. With the above amount of downloads in just one month I guess it is safe to say that we are starting to producing what people want and need for their JDS installation, and to continue increasing the amount of software packaged by gcclinux.com for JDS Linux I would like to invite everyone to visit our download are and check out the software package collection we currently have, once you all had a look I would like to request for your support here in the forum by letting gcclinux.com know, what software packages you wish gcclinux.com could provide and what software packages are available but not really needed, so that when JDS-R3 is released we can concentrate in providing the software packages that everyone need instead of packing software that will never be downloaded.
Above all I would also like to make one last request, if each one of you help spreading the word to at least one person regarding gcclinux.com, this forum, downloads, games, support, then we will be even more motivated and be able to understand even better what the requirements are for all JDS users.
Anyway that you all for taking your time in reading this email and I hope to see you all logged in and downloading.
I’ve created a Site Map thread to make it easier for everyone to find his or her way around.
Site Map Thread
Kind Regards,
Ricardo W.

I think what mean are threads older that 30 days.
For that all you have to do is:
Click on JDS
at the bottom of that you'll see:
Showing threads 1 to 2 of 2, sorted by "last post time" in "ascending" order, from "last 30 days"
Just change that to ,from "the beginning"
There you will find all the old threads on JDS.
Kind Regards,
Ricardo W.

Just to let you all know there has been some more updated packages posted on our site and we will continue doing our best to update the most popular packages as soon as new releases are available.
We have already managed to be the first ones to have a new version available of certain application on JDS and that is what we are aiming for.
Also I would just like to let everyone know that any issues with our packages or any request for us to keep a package available and up-to-date at our site just drop us a message at our own forum and we will be happy to comply if possible.
Kind Regards,
Ricardo W.

unusual install problem
Hi Ricardo,
I don't know if it is appropriate to use this thread for this query. If not, please feel free to use it to create a new thread on this topic.
I have played with the live CD version of the distro for perhaps 18 months, ever since it was released with one of the UK Linux magazines I used to get from the newsagents. I love the product, and look forward to an update with the newer kernel, perhaps.
I find that on an AMD Duron/1300MHz machine with 512RAM and a 52x CD drive, it runs almost as fast as you would expect an installed version.
But I don't wish to use crippled software, which is why I ended up with a box copy of 10 CDs (in September 2004) from the local Sun office. They told me it is the last copy in captivity.
ooops - I put 1994 here, a major typo, lol
Here is my ongoing saga...
I have tried installing it in both exclusive use of the HDD, and also as a dual boot scenario, and I have the same problem on all of them.
HP Vectra VL Intel PII-400MHz with 192Mb RAM (choice of two)
IBM Aptiva AMD K6-2 500MHz with 256Mb RAM
locally built clone AMD Duron 1300 with 512Mb RAM
Installation runs perfectly on all of them until shortly before the end of CD#2;
At 95% it locks up during installation of Evolution (overall CD#2 progress is 91%) with 3mins 28 secs left to run, the installation from the status window being "evolution-1.4.5.2 --- The integrated GNOME mail, calendar and addressbook suite"
A reboot and cancelling the request to insert CD2 and replacing it with CD#3 allows it to continue to the end.
It does not run from that point on. Has anyone else encounted the problem? Or got a suggested or known fix for it please?
Assuming that the CD#2 might be damaged, I located the download directory from a thread late last year, and downloaded the evaluation CD#2 and just the same story on two of the same machines.
I then downloaded CDs 1 and 3 and tried in the 1300MHz Duron machine an installation of all three downloaded CDs, rather than the ones from the boxed set.
The filenames of the downloaded ISOs were SLES-8-SLEC-1-i386-Int-beta10c-Quicksilver-CD*.iso - the * being replaced with the CD number.
I repeated the exercise in several machines using the other CD drive. No difference.
BTW There is absolutely no problem in two of those machines with SuSE 8, 9 and 9.1! I mention this because of knowing a bit about what it is based on.
The same machines run an array of other distros, including ubuntu and kubuntu, Lycoris, Xandros, (earlier) Lindows and (later) Linspire, all in both stand-alone and dual boot configurations.
I'm no guru, but am a beta tester ("insider") for Linspire.
I'm really puzzled, and seriously I would love to be able to use the SJDS Operating System in earnest.

been there with evolution at 96%
walk out for one or 2 hours and you will see it passed the point and asks you for CD3. (it actually takes me 15 minutes or so)
i had no clue why this is the case though.

shshjun thanks for the tip. I've had several different attempts to reinstall as a result of your tip giving me an installation at last!
I end up with several problems, one associated with SMB, another with the screen resolution, and a couple of questions to append at the end.
First, SMB works well when logged in as root. However it refuses to work in user mode (I tried two actually) and the icon doesn't even appear in the This Computer > Network Places > Windows Network window. It says that SMB server is not running (in user mode).
Second SaX detects the monitor correctly (HP 900 19") and the network card (onboard thingy) but the best it will do on trying all resolutions from 1024x768x 15bit or 16bit is 1152x764. It runs that at 89KHz/100Hz which I would have thought would be straining it a bit. I can't find how to reduce the scan rates to accomodate other resolutions.
The live distro runs nicely at 1600x1200 with a 75Hz scan rate, same machine. I have several other distros which work well. I use plug-in HDD racks to swap boot drive/OS when powered down.
Two observations. Remote desktop works nicely but I wonder if there is any provision for accessing another computer's desktop remotely from SJDS.
Other one is I love the multimedia key configuration applet
If these questions should be located on new threads, please feel free to move them. Thanks
Richard

smb from jds2 is v2.2 i think and i had problems as well. using v3.0x from gcclinux.com is a breeze. i suggest you go get that (and other good stuff). i don't use smb though. no idea on sax although you did mention the live cd works fine for you.

Okay... Another reinstallation because a string of other errors appeared. We have now eliminated the other errors and the SMB problem; SMB works in both root and user.
I still have the display resolution problem, and this is highly frustrating to me.
Another Question. Is it possible (as in regular Linux) to have a different background image in each virtual desktop? I can see no way of setting this.
Is it possible to get updates to any of the installed apps? For example Gaim of this vintage never liked logging me into Yahoo on an Linux installation, although it would log me into ICQ which I seldom use these days. This problem appears to have been fixed with the current version.

default gaim in jds doesn't work with yahoo after yahoo changes. upgrade to v0.83 or later will solve this problem.
rpm -Uvh *.rpm from gcclinux.com shall upgrade most of your apps. this is not available from jds update. i think jds is for enterprise users, not as the one you worked for which i never use.
gnome used to have different bg image for each desktop, shown in rh 7.2 or earlier. this is no longer default. i believe it's possible. it's not necessary to me but a really nice option. i don't use kde.

Sure, you can use vnc. I forget if vncviewer shipped with JDS2 by default, if not I'm pretty sure it's on one of the CDs somewhere, or any RPM compiled for SuSE 8.1 should work.
