Installing Nvidia Drivers

Very simple steps:

1) Kernel sources must be installed and configured. Usually this means
installing the 'kernel-source' package with YaST2, update it - if not
already done - via YaST2 Online Update (YOU) and configure it then
with the following commands:

cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig && make dep

2) Use the nvidia installer for 1.0-6106.

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux

3) Configure XFree86 with

4) mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config_old

5) sax2 -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)

NOTE: There is no need to try to enable 3D support. It's already enabled, when the nvidia driver is running. Ignore the misleading error message, that 3D support can't be enabled.

I hope this helps.

Hi!

I'd like to also share my experiences with Sun JDS and Nvidia. All of the above worked for me. Except that I also had to delete (or move if you want to be sure) my XF86Config located at /etc/X11 _before_ running sax2.

Not doing so caused my system to fail when initializing the x server.

In another machine, I had to do it yet differently. I've installed nvidia drivers as described above by gcclinux and I then ran "sax2" only. Under the Graphics card configuration in sax2, I've deleted the default card and added a new one(an old TNT32 Model 64), which has 3D acceleration by default.

Regards!

Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get the nvidia driver to work on my JDS setup -- GeForce FX 5200 Ultra 128Mb DDR on an A7N8X mobo, AMD Athlon XP 3000 & 1Gb Corsair RAM (matched 512 sticks running in dual-channel mode). I have done the install and when I attempted to edit the XFree config file directly, returning to runlevel 5 gave me the black screen and I had to reboot to clear the flicker from all the virtual consoles. When I attempt to use sax2 GUI to configure the X server, I do not get an option for my card and trying to use the 2 closest listed (5800 and 5800 ultra) gives me the following error message when attempting to test the X server:

Xserver fails:
(KK) NVIDIA(0): failed to allocate configuration DMA context
(KK) Screen(s) found but none have usable configuration

I also don't seem to have agp enabled, which I wasn't even aware of until I started working on getting the new driver installed. The standard nv driver is working for me now, but I can't start playing with Looking Glass until I get the 3D stuff going. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mary Anna

Hi masinger53!

Welcome to LQ.org. Try doing this as root in a terminal:

mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config_old

then run sax again:

sax2 -m 0=nvidia

Basically, you've renamed the XF86Config file to XF86Config_old and sax2 should start a fresh one for you with nvidia display drivers instead. I hope this works for you.

Regards!

Great gcclinux!

Thanks a lot mate . Well, this is a little work around that worked for me. Might be different from case to case.

Cheers!

I tried the suggestion and it worked well except for 1 minor detail: no visible mouse cursor after running sax2 and restarting the Xserver. I've reverted back to the old configuration, since I rather prefer to see the cursor while I'm working. =)

And yes, I configured the mouse to the ps2 explorer that it is -- I have a Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (one of the few things Microsoft did that I actually like).

If anyone else has experienced the disappearing mouse cursor and has a cure, I'd love to hear it.
