Article explains JDS motivation

When I got involved with JDS, I was working on developing a "Linux in a box" curriculum for a university in the south.

We got a go ahead to roll out either openoffice.org or StarOffice at the school and were aiming at getting the curriculum accredited for "advanced placement" credits in K12 schools.

Sun signed an agreement to give the school StarOffice for free.

The book and a LiveCD rom went together so a student could do the course on any x86 computer without having to install Linux.

We're still working on that porject but with another school. Someday, I'll explain how we got it done.

If you have an interest in the way we're promoting Linux, here's an article currently up.

The same article will be on Lxer.com tomorrow.

I followed that link - and several other related ones; very interesting, and puts it all into well-written perspective.

Something that does puzzle me with so many negative posted rants (on the forum I saw) is the basic thing that appears to be overlooked.

Sun actually owns the name Java

I think the logic in trying to criticise the owner of a trade mark or brand name over the way they use said name is quite mind-boggling!

The whole negative press thing is pretty mind boggling. For example, people say Sun funded SCO to kill Linux.

That's not so. They bought their license to insure their x86 rights and indemnify their customer base.

It's psychologically beneficial to Microsoft for people to transfer their outrage to Sun. It's not well deserved.

Yeah mate.... have you read Andrew Grygus' website at all? some very interesting stuff he's been posting for years. And I rather like Steve Gibson's as well, and there's another guy who gets negative press
