xorg.conf.new for Fujitsu Stylistic 4120
First off thank you LQ for the Gentoo forum after spending this much time building a gentoo system i plan to have a lot of fun with it.
ok back to y im here im working with xorg.conf to get a gui going (KDE) but the screen driver brokedid ive been trying different sections for two days now, ill have to publish a guide for tablets when im done in thanks for all the help, right now X -config /root/xorg.conf.new says Code:
dlopen: /drivers/video/i830: cannot open shared object file: No Such file or firectory Code:
.... Code:
(EE) Failed to load module "i830" (module does not exist, 0) Code:
Microprocessor thanks of any help in advance theABCasian |
Futzing with the kernel isn't going to get you the video driver you need. You need an Xorg video driver. There is no i830 driver for Xorg. Not being an Intel user, I would guess you would use the xf86-video-intel driver for the i830 chip set. A search of your package manager or a Google search would probably help you determine the correct driver for the Intel i830.
|
Hi theabcasian, you need to use the intel driver to be able to run with the i830 driver.
Before doing anything else, can you post this : Code:
# emerge --info |
Update Ive been playing arround a little more and found that the driver is "intel" and to d2_racing if i were on a virtual system yes but i dont want to type for three days to get the 400 lines of code on here sorry :study: is there anything you are looking for?
now that im using intel as the driver im getting a new error when i run Code:
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new Code:
..... |
Hi, since you don't have anything to cut and paste, you will need to tell us this :P
Are you using the 2008.0/desktop profile ? Search for a line like this when you run this command : Code:
# emerge --info Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" Code:
# emerge -auDNv world |
Also, if you are running the 2008.0/desktop profile, then you don't need to generate a /etc/X11/xorg.conf
You should run this as root to test your box : Code:
# startx |
emerge-- info
Code:
Portage 2.1.6.11 (default/linux/x86/2008.0 gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.6.2-r0, 2.6.28-gentoo-r5 i686) Code:

This seems to indicate that no valid configuration for your screens can be found in your xorg.conf. I have nil experience with intel drivers so I can only guess, but maybe you need to add your screens to your xorg.conf or add some modelines. Quote:

i92guboj you are the bomb pasting files now
/root/xorg.conf.new Code:

Hi, first thing first, since you are not using the 2008.0/desktop profile, then your Use flags are not right at all.
So, you need to do this : Add this inside your USE= Code:
USE=" qt3 qt4 kde dvd alsa cdr tcl tk X bindist debug fontforge svg jadetex i810 nls hal dbus" Code:
# emerge -auDNv world So, when the compilation is finish, you need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf like that : Code:
Section "ServerLayout" |
For the record, your X Server is not working because you don't use desktop profile and because of that, you need to set manually some Use flags.
For my concern, I use the desktop profile and here is my /etc/make.conf : Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe" Code:
# cat /usr/portage/profiles/targets/desktop/make.defaults |
made both changes didn't change anything :(
Code:
X.Org X Server 1.5.3 Code:
Section "ServerLayout" Code:
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically |
theabcasian,
Lets stop working through a keyhole. Code:
emerge wgetpaste Code:
wgetpaste /etc/X11/xorg.conf We may also need your kernel .config file |
|
theabcasian,
Your current error is Code:
(++) Using config file: "/etc/make.conf" Xorg looks in a lot of places for a config file, in different places for root and normal users too. Try typing Code:
startx |
sorry about that
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new http://dpaste.com/51277/ and X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf http://dpaste.com/51278/ after mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf then startx http://dpaste.com/51281/ |
Hi, you didn't add hal as a use flag.
So, add this one inside your /etc/make.conf and run this : Code:
# emerge -auDNv world |
added hal and got this
http://dpaste.com/51538 but thats not what its been saying its been erroring when i run emerge -auDNv world Code:

theabcasian,
Code:
(EE) intel(0): sil164 not detected got 5: from DVOI2C_E Slave 112. Adding hal to USE= in /etc/make.conf may do nothing as hal is included in the /desktop profile. How did you make your kernel ? Please post your /usr/src/linux/.config file ... you know how to use wgetpaste by now. |
file was to large for wgetpaste to move learned how to set up a thumb drive and move some stuff around in mac's Darwin terminal finally got it though for simplicity sake I'll move it to my public file on me.com
http://public.me.com/theabcasian http://rapidshare.com/files/241169709/config_for_gentoo |
theabcasian,
I'm surprised that wgetpaste failed. Its used every day to post kernel config files by people that come into #gentoo on irc.freenode.net. http://public.me.com/ seems to be broken as it doesn't like my browser, so I can't read you post. |
added a rapid share link
http://rapidshare.com/files/241169709/config_for_gentoo |
could this be the wrong file it says do not edit on the top as for the issue with wgetpaste it was erroring asking me to use --verbose but it was the only file that was erroring.
|
theabcasian,
Its the right file ... it shows your kernel configuration. The warning is telling you not to edit it directly - you must use make menuconfig. Your kernel looks good - you have the options that your Intel chip set needs set. To overcome the [CODE]('ebuild','/','sys-apps/man-pages-posix-2003a','merge') pulled in by sys-apps/man-pages-posix required by ('ebuild','/','sys-apps/man-pages-3.2 0','merge'){/CODE] error, remove the old man pages package and install the new one. Read the text in red just above the error you posted. The command is Code:
emerge -C <old_package> && emerge -1 <new_package> After you have fixed the block, run the command that d2_racing gave you and allow it to rebuild any packages that it needs to. |
Ok in case anyone else needs this The answer to the problem was i was using the wrong driver i used xorgconfig to make the xorg file which ill post asap. and the key was the driver i needed to use VESA thanks to everyone who helped. :D
|
For the record, can you post your actual /etc/X11/xorg.conf :P
|
theabcasian,
The intel driver should work with your card. Whats normally the hard bit, the kernel, is ok. The VESA driver works with every graphics card made since 1998. It gives very basic functionality only. You don't get any acceleration. The intel driver will provide 2D and 3D hardware acceleration. Use the vesa driver meanwhile but don't give up on the intel one. |
ok that explains why VESA works, and why startx works on root but only has a few terminals and a clock but i cant start KDE
|
theabcasian,
The few 'terminals and a clock' are twm, which is installed when you install Xorg. twm is a good test for Xorg working but you probably won't liek it for much else. How did you install KDE ? How do you want to start KDE ? You can have a Graphical log in, or you can type startx in the login shell. Both methods need some configuration and the configuration is different in each case. As you have twm working, it should work for root and normal users. If not, you have a configuration issue to address before you go any further. |
KDE was having issues installing so i switched to xfce works way better just a little more work for setup
|
ok so im still working on the intel drivers vesa works but the graphics support is to low even for xfce which seems to work better than KDE and install easier my current Xorg.conf is
http://dpaste.com/56103 i used xorgcfg -textmode to make it |
Hi, your /etc/X11/xorg.conf should be like this :
Code:
Section "ServerLayout" |
theabcasian,
A few quick wins. The intel driver needs Code:
# Section "DRI" Further down the xorg.conf file Code:
# Load "glx" The vesa driver will ignore those settings. Fix them and test. If it still fails, to take this forward we need to see the following files. They need to be a matching set. emerge wgetpaste. You will use this tool to paste all the information we need. Select the intel driver in xorg.conf now start Xorg. startx at the comand line should do it. It will die in the manner which you have become accustomed to. For what we need, thats good. Now run the following commands *before* you switch xorg.conf back to vesa:- Code:
wgetpaste /etc/X11/xorg.conf Your xorg.conf will tell us what you asked Xorg to do. Your /var/log/Xorg.0.log will tell what Xorg actually did, which may be different. It should also have some useful error messages. |

theabcasian,
Code:
Parse error on line 30 of section Screen in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf Going back to the file you pasted above you had Code:
Code:
# Load "glx" Code:
# Load "dri" The important line from your lspci is Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 04) That allows us to check your kernel. Your kernel is full of junk you will never use and is optimised for a 32 CPU i486 based server, which is not what you have. It can be made much smaller and a bit faster but thats a problem for another day. The important bit for your graphics is Code:
# So, your kernel seems to be good. It goes with your lspci anyway. Lets check that you are actually using that kernel. The header says Code:
2.6.28-gentoo-r5 Code:
uname -a Check your kernel date, fix your xorg.xonf file, test with the intel driver selected then post back. Include links to you new xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log |
thanks neddy for all the help
the new log is http://dpaste.com/57077 and the xorg with the two edits is http://dpaste.com/57078 and thanks to everyone else as well im learning a lot |
Hi, can you post this :
Code:
# equery list intel Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="vesa intel" |
Are you sure, that you don't need the module CONFIG_DRM_I915
|
theabcasian,
First the easy bit ... this section in your xorg.conf is still commented out. Remove the # symbols or accelerated graphics will only ever work for root and its a bad idea to run everything as root. Code:
# Section "DRI" Code:
Linux kernel version: 2.6.28-gentoo-r5 # Wed Jun 17 22:56:16 2009 Code:
2.6.28-gentoo-r5 #1 SMP Wed Jun 17 23:19:59 PDT 2009 i686 Build Date: 16 June 2009 01:02:01AM Now onto the next piece of your problem. The log says:- Code:
(**) intel(0): Depth 8, (--) framebuffer bpp 8 Code:
Section "Screen" 16 does not support transparency but is faster. 24 is slower and can do all sorts of visual effects, that make it slower still. To make hardware acceleration work, choose 16 for now. Even after these things, Xorg continued to start ... it just disabled features that you asked for but it could not provide because of other settings. The killer error is:- Code:
(WW) intel(0): No outputs definitely connected, trying again... The intel driver provides commands to manually tell the driver what your display devices are and where they are connected. Read man intel Your lspci suggests that your system is a laptop, just because this chipset is often found in laptops. To help further we need to know what displays you have connected by make and model number, so we can describle them to Xorg. The chipset supports up to three, including TV. The routine is the same. Do the changes I've requested, test, and post links to xork.conf and Xorg.0.log Also tell us about your display(s). If its a laptop with a build it LCD, what is its native resolution ? |

theabcasian,
We have reached the end of my knowledge and I'm reading the man page. Thats Code:
man intel Code:
Option "ForceEnablePipeA" "true" Code:
Section "Device" If Xorg still fails, add the line Code:
Option "ModeDebug" "true" This makes the driver add debug information to the log. It won't make it work if it didn't before but it may help narrow down the problem. Test and post both files. You will be getting the hang of that now. |
