Why is root /mnt/gentoo

I am installing gentoo onto a virtual box. I am wondering why in the documentation that gentoo has on their website they tell you to mount the root partition to /mnt/gentoo instead of /.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...?part=1&chap=4

it is the last section 4.e at the very bottom of page

Hello cbrei1023,

this is because / is the rootdirectory of the host-system from which you are installing gentoo. /mnt/gentoo is supposed to be an empty directory where the new Gentoo-partition will be mounted.
Later, after chrooting to /mnt/gentoo this directory is the / directory of the Gentoo System.

Thank you. I kind of figured that out when I did a df -h after mounting my partitions. I noticed that / was the same size as the CD I am installing off of. So currently would the root of the CD be root until I do the chroot to /mnt/gentoo.

Sorry for the double post, I should have put it in the last one. I am going to have to log off and go home soon. Will it be safe to shut down the virtual box and then start it up again later if I remount all my drives?

Hi,

if you are installing Gentoo in Sun Virtualbox you may save the current state of the system. Just close the program and chose "save current state".

It is also possible, to shut the whole system down and later to mount the drives again.
All changes you made in the new Gentoo-partitions will persist.
