Now you're in for it.

You're asking for opinions that have caused quite a bit of divisiveness in the technical community. Those who hate systemd will tell you it is the cause of all the ills of the world. Those who like systemd will tell it is the greatest thing since slice bread. The rest of us who just use whichever one is installed will tell you that both work.

Unless you have a good reason to change I'd just say use whichever one came with the distro.

Just use OpenRC. systemd is hated for VERY valid reasons. It's unreliable, it's a security risk, and it's not easier than using OpenRC.

It's called OpenRC actually, not rc-update.

In two words:

OpenRC: is the default for Gentoo and has been so for a while. So if you don't have any specific reason to change the defaults just use OpenRC.

Systemd: is the standard for most major Linux distros nowadays (RedHat/Fedora, Debian, OpenSuSE, Arch, ...). If you were happy with systemd on those distros and want to use your previous systemd experience with them in Gentoo then move to systemd.

If you go the systemd way be warned that Gentoo documentation (mostly blog and forum posts, that doesn't go for Gentoo wiki as it generally covers both init systems) often considers you're using OpenRC with Gentoo. So you have to adjust the information in its init-system-specific part. On the other hand you can obtain systemd-specific information right from RedHat/CentOS documentation. It's absolutely adequate for Gentoo.

p.s. don't listen to trolls. Both OpenRC and Systemd are good and stable systems fit for the purpose. No matter which one you choose -- Gentoo works perfect with it.
