new stage3 install pam wont work
 

Trying to do a stage3 install from gentoo 10.0 live dvd and getting stuck.

Trying to emerge -auvND system and it gets stuck at dbus because of faulty pam.

If I try to emerge -av pam it wants to install
It only gets as far as dbus and gets stuck at
Other commands fail too like passwd (I cant set a root password).

I cant re-emerge pam as it wants dbus first but cant get past it, not even with --skipfirst.

The stage3 file was an older stage3-i686-2008.0.tar.bz2. Should I try a newer base then start again?

I'm running Gentoo amd64 and my versions of the packages are currently the same as those you are emerging.
I don't understand why you are emerging from a 10.0-live-DVD with such an old stage3 version. Probably this is the reason for your problems with pam. I installed a few Gentoo-systems within the past half year, always with a new stage3 and portage-snapshot and never had such an issue.

The reason for the old stage file is because the file is one I had on another system and my download bandwidth is on its limit (after downloading the 10.0 dvd)!

I didn't think the age of the stage3 file made too much difference as long as you update system/world straight away.

I am installing on a new compaq presario CQ61 laptop and have had a lot of trouble getting live dvds to boot up. That is the reason I tried the 10.0 DVD.

All others I have tried to boot Ubuntu, Gentoo 2008 or gentoo 2007 have all fallen over at some point in the boot process.

The 10.0 dvd has run great. Even wireless works straight out of the box. The minimal cd works but then I have no wireless networking so I cant get anywhere.

I might wait another week then download the latest stage3 file and try again.

I think you refer to the bootprocess of the live-CD and not of the new installed system. There is a workaround I've used sometimes on an older machine. I once had to boot from a CD (Slackware) that won't boot but I had a CD of Damn-Small-Linux which booted without problems. In this link: http://www.slackforum.de/forum/index...887&#msg_16887 another user pointed me to a solution. One can boot with a bootable CD and then (when the bootprompt is shown) change the CD or DVD.
This Laptop would also run with Gentoo amd64. I've an Asus with a Dual-Core and run Gentoo amd64 on it.

Another suggestion: if you have a running (and bootable) system on the Laptop, you may take this as the hostsystem for another new Gentoo-installation. On my Desktop-PC I installed Slackware64 at first on a small partition and installed Gentoo from there. Be aware that this will only work from 32bit to 32bit or from 64bit to 64bit systems since a "chroot" from 32 to 64bit will cause trouble (I know there is a workaround for this issue which I don't know but you have to do additional steps which are not described in the Gentoo-handbook).

What I meant by this was at different parts of the hardware detection or wont quite get to a login prompt. They all get past the initial boot prompt from grub, but stop at different times during the live cd setup.
The Gentoo 10.0 dvd has been the most successful one so far.

Really?? I thought it was a 32 bit pentium machine! If I come accross a copy of Gentoo amd64 I will have a play.

Im just using the 10.0 dvd to chroot into the stage3 and build up the system from scratch, which is i think what you mean. This works well as I get a full desktop to surf the net and easy wireless networking while I install.

I gave up and started again with the same stage file as before but this time it is working great and fully upgraded.

Now I just have to build a desktop.
