Greetings All,
I have just completed complete gentoo installation using step by step guidelines from handbook.
I am using vmware 6 on windows.
As per the exact instructions given in hadbook, my partitions are:
default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Gentoo Linux 2.6.24-r5
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.24 root=/dev/hda3
When I boot.....
Kernel panic-not syncing :VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (2,0)
Also showing me the message..
please append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available options:
0800 10485760 sda driver:sd
0801 31626 sda1
0802 500377 sda2
0803 9953685 sda3
one more line...
and kernel panics
When I change root=/dev/sda3 from (/dev/hda3) it boots up and give this message :
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/hda3
Superblock could not be read or does not define a correct ext2 filesystem
etc
and then asks me for root password, which I did not set.Is there any default password?
When I change root=/dev/sda3 ,it works fine when I boot in rescue mode but there the /boot/grub subdirectory is missing.
Is the problem due to Vmware,My vmware is using the virtual drive as IDE, so I have also used the drive as /dev/hda throught partition and mount.
It fails now at a later stage because you probably forgot to sync /etc/fstab with that as well.
In rescue mode it boots because it doesn't mount /, what you see is only a ram image, that's why it misses most of the stuff.
Finally, the password should have been set during installation. You can use passwd to set it. For that you first need to boot from a livecd, and chroot to your gentoo drive, then use passwd.
