You are not using a login manager, so you need to launch the consolekit session yourself (provided you are up-to-date enough).

Code:
ck-launch-session gnome-session
If this doesn't solve the issue, please, use "tail -f ~/.xsession-errors" on a terminal while running X. Try to plug/mount the device and see if anything useful is printed in there.

tail: cannot open `/home/n3t/.xsession-errors' for reading: No such file or directory

That being said, is the file really there or not? If it's not, do the following:

Code:
touch /home/n3t/.xsession-errors

I have the impression you are running that command on an xterm (or the like).

That's not the intended usage. You have to use that command in your ~/.xinitrc, instead of just "gnome-session" or whatever you use to start gnome when running "startx".

Well, a bit of explanation.

"startx" is a script that launches an X session and then runs the contents of ~/.xinitrc. You probably have an ~/.xinitrc file with something like this inside:

Code:
exec gnome-session
You need to change that command by the one I provided above. If you have no ~/.xinitrc file, then create it and add this line:

Code:
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session > ${HOME}/gnome.log 2>&1

Quote:

No, if you are running X from the command line and you use the ~/.xinitrc line I provided everything that X spits out should be logged to ~/gnome.log now. Look into that file, I suggest using "tail -f ~/gnome.log" on a terminal to do so.

ps. For the consolekit stuff you work, you need to make sure that you have compiled your system with consolekit support. In other words, add "consolekit" to your USE flags, then do "emerge -auDvN world" and say "yes" if something needs to be recompiled. Then make sure that consolekit is running (/etc/init.d/consolekit start) and set it to run on every boot (rc-update add consolekit default).

Runlevel here is not too relevant. He might be on runlevel 3, but he's launching X manually anyway.

So here is my ./xinitrc file :

Quote:
export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-
#exec gnome-session
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session > ${HOME}/gnome.log 2>&1
i logged out and then ran startx again. Plugged-in the USB and the same error popped-up.

tail -f ~/gnome.log

I don't think that these errors has a relation with USB drive..

Anyway..continue with emerge -auDvN world
or not ?

Those messages have nothing to do with your problem.

First thing first: is consolekit running at all? Try this:

Code:
# ps aux|grep -i console
root 2069 0.0 0.1 122880 3412 ? Ssl 08:44 0:00 /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon
root 3753 0.0 0.0 10200 912 pts/4 R+ 10:52 0:00 grep --colour=auto -i console
As in the sample output, it should show that /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon is running.

Second, yes, make sure that "consolekit" is in your USE flags. Then run "emerge -auDvN world", if any package is reported to be rebuilt, then say "yes" and wait until it completes. There should be no errors, otherwise report them here.

Understand that if the involved packages don't have consolekit support or the consolekit daemon is not running then the rest will be useless.
