Gentoo LiveCD or Minimal CD
I am thinking about installing gentoo.
On the download site there is a Minimal CD and a LiveCD. What is the difference and what is the best to chose??? |
I've always used the minimal CD. Check out the Gentoo Handbook for your architecture and it'll explain your install options. I couldn't tell you anything about the live cd as I've never had a reason to use it.

The answer depends on what you want to do. The minimal install allows you to download and install only the additional components you want on your system. The LiveCD is just that- it lets you run Gentoo from the CD. |
I tried the Live CD and it gave me a lot of problems. The minimal CD is easier to use to setup your system using the Handbook.
Just my 2cents. |

The minimal cd contains no stage3 tarball, no Portage snapshot, no prebuilt packages and is therefore not suitable for networkless installation. The live cd contains everything you need, therefore you can install without a network. Have a look at this:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...?part=1&chap=2 The minimal installation was great at automatically detecting and setting up my netowrk. Hence, I was able to download and install the tarball. I personally perfer the minimal cd. Regards, JQ |
Definately the minimal cd.You will end up having to compile everything again anyway with the livecd because the packages on it would be pretty old

For the record, I always use SystemRescueCD, because it's a Gentoo minimal CD with a recent kernel but the most important thing,is that I can surf the next while I'm installing Gentoo. It's only 240 megs I think, so it's not so big at all.
|
I've never found the gentoo live CD's to be to up to date.
I would recommend minimal CD, but burn youself a copy of ubuntu live first in case ( if you have only one computer ) because sometimes even simple drivers for common networking cards are missing.. Gary |
I have used System Rescue CD to install Gentoo on several PCs. It is great, with USB Support and Firefox.

I would agree that the best installation medium for Gentoo is the SystemRescueCD. It is a Gentoo-based distribution, and it is readily updated. Also, you can grab the latest stable Gentoo tree builds from http://www.funtoo.org if you would like. That will save some time on your initial emerge -avuDN world after the initial base system installation. :)

In fact Kalos, since the autobuild are not official, Funtoo is the best choice :P

I would like to invite to take LiveDVD Calculate Linux Desktop. In the original development of the distribution used. For example the draft Calculate 2, by which very flexibly customize the look and feel of your desktop. CLD is issued once a month with KDE or XFCE.
Here at the forum there is a section Calculate. If you have questions - ask, be glad to answer! http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/calculate-89/ |
