Everything was smooth till chapter-4,but in chapter-5 when I downloaded the stage-3 tarball and tried ..
# md5sum -c portage-latest.tar.bz2.md5sum
it gave me
#md5sumortage-latest.tar.bz2.md5sum:No such file or directory.
Prob1:Is it a wrong tarball??
I have been following the exacts commands as per the instuctions given.
Also after extracting the tarball and on step
# nano -w /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
Prob2:I am not able to find make.conf file,in fact there is no /gentoo/etc
I am using vmware 6 workstation. While installation I had an improper shutdown, but I was able to save the session till the 5th chapter.
where things went wrong?

Did you download the md5sum at all? Are you sure it's on the current dir?

Be very careful when typing, in both your pc and here, because you have typed two different paths there: /gentoo/etc and /mnt/gentoo/etc. This will cause you trouble and will confuse us when trying to help you.

I am sorry the full path is
/mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
There is no etc subdirectory created in /mnt/gentoo afetr I extracted the tarball
If there's no etc subdirectory, then you did something wrong.
Above you speak about the portage snapshot tarball, maybe you downloaded that one and forgot to download the stage tarball. /etc and all the basic stuff is contained within the stage tarball, not the portage one.
In any case, if you really extracted the stage tarball, then you should see the files that have been created inside /mnt/gentoo, if not, extract it again because you obviously didn't extract it well.
You will see at the bottom a file called "portage-latest.tar.bz2", and a file called "portage-latest.tar.bz2.md5sum" which is the md5sum for that tarball. You need to download both files to be able to check the sum. Not that the check is strictly needed, it's just a way to check that the download is not corrupt.
