Thanks a lot.

I noticed that those ugly messages regarding file size errors reported by portage went away for all versions of a package by digesting just one of them but wasn't sure if that was enough. I have written a ridiculous script that walks through the complete tree and digests one version of the ebuilds in each package directory so i should be fine.
I'll use the manifest option instead of digest as you mentioned.
