Alternative to network install

Hi folks,

While I may be able to drive a certain distance to reach a library that has a live (but insecure) Ethernet connection to the Internet, I'm nevertheless wondering, has anyone ever devised a way to install Gentoo in the following manner?

1. Run a large number of wget's in a script to download all source tarballs to a USB flash drive using a computer that has no problem connecting to the Net over Wifi.
2. Boot up the Gentoo install disk to commence the Gentoo installation on a computer for which there is no Wifi driver, using all the source tarballs that are on the USB flash drive rather than attempting to download them.

Thanks.

Good question. This question is probably more worthy of the Gentoo forums. I've seen some interesting stuff, but not what you're asking specifically.

I've been considering this myself:

Gentoo portage download all the tarball to /usr/portage, if it's find a tarball already there it won't attempt to download it anymore. You can download those tarball from any computer then put in in /usr/portage on the computer you want to perform installation.

First. Installing Gentoo without net is a pain.
Second. Maintaining Gentoo without net is even bigger pain.
Third, what is the meaning of "to commence the Gentoo installation on a computer for which there is no Wifi driver"? What wifi hardware is that? Are you absolutely sure this card of yours has no support for Linux?
