Your thought on Ubuntu starting to display advertisements on its terminals?

I am asking for opinions. There are no right or wrong answers.

There could be a variety of opinions

The Ubuntu Pro advertisement indirectly also assures, " If what you are using is not Ubuntu Pro, you are not using the best Linux Ubuntu offers "

I did not cast a vote, because opinion is somewhat mixed.

As long as Ubuntu is promoting their own product in an unintrusive way, I can't say I like it, but I don't find it offensive.

If (when?) they start accepting money from third parties to display their ads, then I am done with them.

That was their search deal with Amazon.

Are the advertisements also displayed in Ubuntu MATE?

This is another reason I'm glad I moved to Debian awhile back. To be fair though I see no real problem with it. Let's face it. How many of the targeted market for Ubuntu is using the terminal very often? Seems an odd choice of a place to stick advertising but meh.

It's ironic. People want distros. They want freedom. No one really thinks about what it takes to make it all possible. These things can't exist solely on good will. In this case Canonical is a for profit just as Red Hat is, albeit with different market targets. If the money in any way goes toward improving the open source world at all I'd say that's a win for them and a win for us.

It is a PR stunt.

Canonical did it deliberately, knowing that it would upset people and cause complaints, and thus generate greater publicity for their service.

It's not unintrusive when it appears in appear in output of the apt-get command - that's the one people can and do use in scripts.

Canonical claimed that was unintentional, that it should only appear in output of the apt command (the one which warns about being scripted).

Of course, in these situations Hanlon's razor is a convenient excuse - one can always pretend it was an error and blame developer incompetence...

An advertisement has no place in "a terminal" and I would never accept it being there. Also, I feel that "such advertisements are very highly over-rated." My computer is not a television ... and did I mention that there are no televisions at all in my home, and haven't been for thirty years?

rokytnji 10-25-2022 01:18 PM

Run it or don't. I did. Not the current. Ancient releases.

If I did run it. I'd probably be more upset with package management than a few words in terminal.

Until I hear they get that behavior using the Ubuntu minimal that fits on cd.
Who am I kidding. I won't care then either.

Unless some sort of --verbose option is passed, command output should be as succinct as possible with no unnecessary information, let alone fluff such as advertising. Even with --verbose, I don't believe advertising is appropriate.

It's not that they don't have the right, it's that doing it shows incredibly poor judgement.

Also, it's a very slippery slope once you start doing stuff like this.

Whatever canonical/ubuntu do or do not do, couldn't care less...

I haven't noticed any. In fact, I did an update from the CLI today and there was no ad.

But I must confess that it's possible one slipped by my notice at some time or other.

As someone who answered "Other," they have just driven me away from Ubuntu for a good while.

273 10-28-2022 08:59 PM

Assuming it doesn't break functionality I see no issue. I have seen a few messages in programs mentioning who wrote them when they start up and I've not seen anyone moan about that.
If you think that people should develop software for free that's all good but if not then this is just another way of people getting money to feed their families.

enigma9o7 10-28-2022 10:04 PM

It could be argued that they are informing, not advertising. The word "advertising" is being used in headlines for shock value.

If it actually becomes actual advertising, then I won't really be happy. But letting EOL users know they can still get free support by signing up with Canonical, the company that distributes the distro I'm running, is not exactly advertising.
