"one hundred years ago we need more carpenters than doctors , nowadays we need more dentists than potato farmers !! better build more higher public institutions of study ...... oh , by the way don't be too harsh on them as before , what we need now is just the functional know-how from those bad blood , with the present situation and that kind of speed we can't do it all by ourselves right , The System have to be maintained at whatever costs ........ BS in Mechanical Engineering from U of Minnesota. Going back to school for MS/PhD this fall at UC Santa Barbara after a few years in the aerospace industry.
---the following is an opinion not intended to hijack this thread; maybe I'll start a new one------ My advice to our (American) college-bound friends interested in any kind of engineering: Bachelor degree-level engineering jobs are evaporating due to the proliferation of outsourcing and subcontracting. If your intent is to work in industry, focus on either technology development or program management. This means either a MS/PhD in engineering or an MBA. The jobs that you prepare for as an undergraduate are being performed by equally qualified engineers in low cost regions such as Mexico and India. These folks can buy about the same number of loaves of bread per pay check as their American counterparts BUT the currency conversion means that companies only have to pay them 1/3 of what they pay Americans. In my experience, if a job can be described in great detail, it can AND WILL be packaged and shipped offshore (unless it involves the military). Maybe I'll start a thread to get into more detail about this. Sorry - I didn't mean to hijack this one :) -HD |
Bachelor's in Chemistry and Biology. Equivalent of an Associate's Degree in Computer Programming. 21+ years experience as a *professional* computer geek ;)

MBAs have become a joke IMHO. For example, a bunch of doctors I know in Tennessee decided they wanted MBAs, so they started a new program at the state university were physicians could get one in just a year. Now they all think they know everything there is to know about running a business. :o
