XavierP - I have some questions

I have a few questions to ask XavierP, i feel bad making a whole thread just to do this but it wont allow me to email you....

I have a Toshiba Satellite A10 and i saw in a post that you have this model laptop as well, basically i want to know if you have gotten the modem to work that came with it. I have recently installed Debian Linux as my first ever linux distro and i hav had a lot of trouble getting the modem to work. Also x-windows doesnt start with Debian because of the graphics card i think.

I saw that you have used quite a few distros but not debian, i am interested in using Slackware aswell so if you can please tell me how well it worked on this laptop and whether x-windows and the modem work with it that would be greatly appreciated. Or if you have the time any other little things that i may find useful .

Thank you

p.s. To any one else who has wasted their time looking at this i am sorry

Sorry to butt in XavierP. BossMonkey, the A10 would have a winmodem. so you would need a linmodem driver for the same.

I have absolutely no idea if the modem works - my home connection and work connection uses eth0 (cos of dsl) so I have never tried it. Mandrake, SuSE and Slackware seem to pick up the modem, but I have never tried using them. Sorry.

But here are a couple of links that I use that may be of help:
http://newsletter.toshiba-tro.de/main/index.html
http://linux.toshiba-dme.co.jp/linux/index.htm

The first has no drivers but is a knowledge base. The second has links and help.

In the future, don't direct your thread titles and or threads to one particular member, especially when others can most likely answer your questions.

And XavierP, if your email is not enabled, enable it fool..

But lets also remember our rules state and say:

" The best place for your question is the forum. We get a large number of emails. If your email contains a question about Linux we will kindly point you to the forums."

I think this goes for any type of technical question as well, not just Linux.

Regards

Alright, i know i really shouldnt hav just asked for XavierP's help but i just thought if i put his name here i would be able to ask exactly wot i needed to.

Thanx ne way XavierP, now i dont actually think there is a person other than me trying to get the modem to work in the world...i think i will install slackware now and see if x-windows works with that. If it does it should be easier for me to get the modem to work cause i will have a nice GUI to work with.

Thank you.

You will require linmodem drivers. The modem installed on the A10 is a WinModem. Linmodems site will have a driver for the same. If it is a Conexant modem, check the Linuxant site.
