Windows 2k serial modem issues...
 

I'm having a spot of bother with a serial modem in Win2k. Basically, when I connect to the internet, the little bubble pops up in the lower-left saying that my connection speed is 115k. Now, I know that this is the speed that the modem is talking to the computer, and I know that in order to change it so that it shows the try Internet connection speed (around 38k - we have a bad phone line) I need to change the dialout command from atdtXXXX (I can't remember the ISP phone number, but it is irrelevant anyway) to atw2dtXXXX, (ie add a W2 to the dialstring), but can I find out how to do this in Windows? Ha!

Anyone know either where I should be looking (registry hack, perhaps) to change the dial string

Am I going about this completely the wrong way?

However, it certainly isn't the answer I was hoping for! How can they make it so damned difficult to change something that should be really quite easy? I mean, come on! Hayes command sets are used by almost all standard modems (not isdn, cable or xdsl, is what I mean), so how can you not change the dialstring? That is just stupid!

Can you you just go into Control Panel/Phone and Modem/Modems/Properties/Advanced and somehow put it into the "Extra initialization commands:" ?

That's where I had s11=40 back when I used the dial-up from w2k and before I discovered I could put smoothwall linux on an old 486 and dial up with that. :)

The s11=40 initialisation string sets the speed for dialing. The dial command itself is not an init string so I can't put it there. Thanks for the thought though. I've just resigned myself to the fact that I knew Win2k was rubbish, I just didn't know how rubbish!

I could, I suppose, write a 'hyperterminal' script that my Mum would need to run before trying to use IE or OL, but I really can't be bothered... I am trying to ween her onto my Linux computer that sits right next to hers!
