win98 Server, as safe as it gets ;-)
Hi
This is the banner that my sshd is giving out to people connecting from the internet. After reading a very good article about M$ in general and security in specific (which security?), I got inspired: Welcome to Windows 98SE Server (Servicepack 31g) MSSA build 6722b (Microsoft SuperSecure(TM) Architecture) It's brand new and since Windows 98SE is such a SECURE and SOLID OS (crashes only once every 1000 years), they made it into a server OS. The patchlevel shows that it is patched so solid that it got a new fourth skin with all the patches that makes it so solid. Hihi, I hope everybody get's the joke. ;---) Cheers Markus |
sound's cool

funny that
I am just wondering why there was so little feedback on this one.
Just to note: This was not ment serious. Hell no! It's just a geek joke. I mean, anybody that ever used win98 for some time knows that it is the worst OS ever conceived when it comes to security and STABILITY (or better the lack thereof), so IMAGINING to use it as a server....http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=59518 Hihii! Scares ya... And "Microsoft" and the words "SuperSecureArchitecture" are also as far apart as it can be. The servicepack number indicates that the beast was patched so many times, that it would look like a quilt. |

i'd have to say winME is the worst. change it to say winMe :) |
winME by far over 98. I used to use an (get ready to cringe) hp pavillion with a celeron running winME. The thing froze up at least 5 times a day, and crashed 3.

Actually I have a Windows 98 SE box, and it's only crashed maybe 10 times out of 2 years of running? It's still running, it's on 14 days without restart . Just get Ad-Aware 6 and Zone Alarm and your set. :p

Yep, Win98SE is the second and almost certainly last Microsoft OS I'll use. Not too buggy once you spend years getting used to tweaking it ;)
|
I had some good times with 98 when I had it on my machine, barely ever crashed. Although when I first installed it, the 50 security updates that had to restart the computer every time one was installed was annoying but it was better then being insecure.

good words?
Whatsthat? Good words about Win 98SE?
Sorry, could not resist: How did you people use Win98 that it did not crash every 4 hours? Win98 has a resource problem, meaning you just start 10 different programms and you can be sure as hell that it will go blue screen. I guess I am a little demanding with OSs, but hey that is what they are for. Here is my fun tutorial for making Win98se crash (try that also for WinME and tell me how it went): Start Adobe Photoshop, load a nice large picture Start your favorite browser. Start some office application, MS Orfice 97 will do or Open Office if you want win98 to choke on something nice. Now go to the browser and start....browsing. Go to this website, open 5 windows, surf around, indulge yourself. And soon, you might see the warning "Windows 98 is running dangerously low on resources" Got 512Megs of Ram like me? Out of resources? Naaaw... Just out of brains that OS is. Now just be patient, a crash is not far away. Try listening to some music at the same time. |
yup, my gaming machine is my Last box with winders on it, win98se is the last winders I'll use. I'm hoping trans-gaming and/or wineX make some big progress soon so I can ditch winders totally.

ME, XP, 2000. No good. 98 wasn't toooo bad though. I'm not saying I don't like linux more but SE was pretty much ok (as long as you run mozilla :) )

I now use Winnie XP as my second OS (it's also the second OS I have from M$) ... But I'll be glad when I can ditch it and free up my terrorised HD :D  |
