What exactly do you mean when you say that it won't run Setup?

To install Windows XP you will need either an external CD or DVD drive and a Windows XP Setup CD (that can be booted). It is also possible to install XP from a thumb drive or flash drive if you create that on some other computer. Creating the thumb drive or flash drive is a bit complicated.

The simplest way to install XP is to use an external CD/DVD drive. If you buy a DVD writer you can use it to make backup copies of files too.

In order to install XP after Linux you will need to shrink the Linux partition and move it forward. Then create a new NTFS partition at the beginning of the disk to install XP. Since XP does not come with software to do any of that you can use a Linux boot CD or some other program such as Partition Magic.

It may be easier to just copy your files from Linux and then start over by erasing the partitions on the netbook. Then create a partition for Windows XP leaving room for Linux. Install Linux after Windows XP. That will let you use the normal Windows XP Setup without doing anything ahead of time (moving the Linux partition).

If you just put in the Windows XP Setup CD and boot it without removing or moving Linux then it will probably complain that the OS or disk configuration isn't supported. To get around that problem you have to either delete all the partitions during Setup or do some things ahead of time.

To prepare for Windows XP ahead of time, move Linux and create a partition for Windows XP. You might also have to put the standard MBR boot software in the first sector with the partition table. Windows expects the standard software to be in the MBR rather than the Linux boot loader.

The rest of the process works like any other dual boot setup if you want both Windows XP and Linux. Reinstall the Linux boot loader after installing Windows XP. You can find dual boot tutorials online.

You want to install XP inside linix? If yes, you can use a virtualisation software like virtual box.
