Will X11/Xorg-Forward disappear soon or later ?

Hello,

X11/Xorg is, according to the devel, to be replaced by Wayland.

They want that Wayland replaces Xorg/X11.

So, little question, will X11/Xorg-Forward forever disappear ?

Regards

There are things Wayland cannot do that Xorg does, and may never be able to do, so it should be quite some time before Xorg disappears from new Gnu/Linux releases. Last I read, expect at least 10 years. So, the answer is later, if ever.

^ I fully concur.

Also, look at other software that was declared dead/superseded decades ago and is still alive and kicking.

A 2016 thread asking the same...
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...098/page3.html

XWayland (minimal X-server) can provide X11 support for applications that explicitly require it in a Wayland compositor environment. That has helped with eliminating the need to maintain/use the bloated, insecure, and obsolete Xorg code base. However there are many production use cases that will require it for some time. That could realisitcally be measured in years. Given the development of the major desktop environments, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of desktop users are using Wayland in the next five years though.

2022, Wayland starts to be quite much present.

X11/Xorg devel don't want much to go further with X. They need something new, and Wayland came as the big picture in Focus.

A guess, in 4-5 years, X11/Xorg is no longer and it is fully replaced by Wayland in most distros. just guess.

As you can see from their website, Wayland's architecture is a cleaner "make-over" that is intended to improve the original design without breaking it.

But, it's a simple fact of our industry that nothing ever truly "disappears." As we have recently seen here, there are still companies out there who are using punched cards ... because the technology still works for them.

So no actual research, no links or verifiable quotes, just some subjective statements, a.k.a. Rant.
