Why would anybody buy a phone* $upporting out-dating it?

My Samsung Galaxy S7 is pure garbage, just like Apple and obviously capitalism. To have versus not have ignores the not halves; "innovation" should come from need not greed.

My Geeks Phone is way older and kicks like a mule!

Before $tupidity Apple use to update date forever!!!

Who needs a mobile phone at all? If I'm out shopping or walking the dog, I don't want to be on the phone at the same time. If anyone wants to talk to me, they can leave a message on my landline and I'll ring back when I get home. Why should I be at their beck and call?

Cuz some of us get on the internet in the boonies next to camp fire and connect their laptop to satellite towers to read posts like this.

Edit. @james. My phone life is basically my phone is wrench. It is neither good or bad. I have control of the power button. If it breaks. I find a new satellite tower router for my motorcycle adventures.

Basically they all come with cruft.

Yes, going backwards isn't an option but giving the controls to corporations, stupidity!

Hazel you don't need to ringtone your phone, at home or the market\dogwalk? Plus, with that mentality why have a house phone?

I'd be more into why have a supermarket 75%+- of it is not nourishment...

Agreed. One can turn things off, it is not an electronic leash, it is a device which I use to give me certain results when I want them. If I decide I do not wish those capabilities, I can choose to not utilize a cell phone.

In talking about a certain make/model/product line being garbage. Well, given the free market, nobody here should be surprised with variations in quality for products or services. You can get fleeced, you can get an awesome deal, or you can not participate at all.

As a husband and a father, the kids getting started in their adult lives, but still relying on their parents, I got them phones and put them on our plan, because they'd be easier to access and be capable of reaching me and my wife (no service interruptions because they didn't pay their bill for 3 months), and they'd also have the capabilities to call for help, along with their AAA cards. But know how to change a tire or change a battery since they were taught! They grow up = They get their own places, phones, and decide on car insurance, road assistance, etc on their own, with prior advice having been given. Since my wife likes/wants the capabilities, but is less technical, she cares that she can do the things she wants to, and I usually get her and myself the same phone models so I can provide assistance with her phone. And then she orders a zillion cases. (Whatever) Other friends and relatives typically guide her about certain apps that they interact with her about, but she also learns over time.

Point of all that is while I could adopt some form of minimalist attitude, it seems unrealistic with typical family life, at least around where I'm located. Not claiming anyone is, but I've definitely never been a Luddite.

The other odd thing about all this is that largely a lot of these ideas and attitudes did come to me from those older than me. Technology has grown, they are given access to it, either as a gift or because they agreed, either with enthusiasm, or reluctantly. However those people also demonstrated their own personal restraint behaviors as to how they wished to use any new whiz/bang technology. Vision of years ago, myself or a brother/sister going, "But Ma, lemme show you, it can ... !!!" and her replying, "Thanks. I just need it to make a call if the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, I don't need that." (Lesson learnt! Thanks Ma, Dad, or Uncle/Aunt so-and-so!)

Depends on the caller - if it's my daughter across the pond I definitely want to answer it, even in the supermarket. Others run the risk of being ignored.

If you use it right, it could be them at your beck and call...

And if you live where the caller pays for the call all the "this is microsoft and your windows is causing internet problems" calls disappear (although you do need to remove the phone on your landline to get this feature).

Another annoying thing about, at least the S7 and crapple: the touch screen goes to the edge of the phone so you can't hold it without touching anything or you put a case on it and you can't touch the edge!!!

Average is stupid, freedom is freedom!

I've definitely thought about rooting it (bought the unlocked version to go any service provider) and before it comes time to make it another security cam: motion detection, to email, looking like a cell phone charging on the side of the room,,, will try:
