Why recommend google? Why not Yahoo?

Why do people always recommend Google and not Yahoo? Is it because Google finds more results, because Yahoo gets more results then Google, try it.
Why...? That is the question.

trickykid 08-18-2005 05:20 PM

It's not the number of results to me, it's the quality. I have better searchs with google, espeically since 99% of my searches use google.com/linux

kencaz 08-18-2005 05:29 PM

I used to use Yahoo exclusively back in the 90's...(has it been that long?) anyway, when google was launched the had a good interface (no adds) and a good engine... Yeah, Yahoo is older and may give more hits but google seems to get what I want the first time. and I am used to the interface... Yes, there are lots of search engines out there but google just seems to give the best results...

Google:
- Better results
- Less junk
- Lighter pages
- Just what I was looking for :-)

KimVette 08-18-2005 05:59 PM

I've started using Yahoo more because Google is getting targeted by cloakers and spammers (doorway pages) - ever since the IPO Google has been losing focus and is being surpassed by Yahoo! in their key area (search engine result quality)

trickykid 08-18-2005 07:49 PM

Alright.. I did one quick search to see which one in my opinion is more relevant in their searches:

What did I search for: psychedlic furs

Google returned 173,000
Yahoo returned 483,000

I took the first two hits from google to compare to yahoo. Both hit the same fan site as #1 but yahoo didn't even list the artists main website url at sony, but instead was at #19 unlike google that had it at #2. The link at #19 to the same site but was for an Overview page instead, deeper into the official site. I browsed up until about 120ish hits or so and never saw the url for the actual link to the main official website. To me, a link to their main website where you can then browse from cause well, I'm sure they are going to have psychedlic furs mentioned at least on each page at the same site, why not link directly to the main url page? Sure this is only one search and I'm wondering how many of those 200,000 hits google didn't find are even relevant to the search terms..

1. the psychedelic furs / burned down days
Fan tribute offers a discography, gigography, videography, multimedia downloads, photos, discussion forum, reviews, and links.

2. The Psychedelic Furs
The Psychedelic Furs.
www.sonymusic.com/artists/PsychedelicFurs/ - 2k - Cached - Similar pages

If you link to the second hit, it's the artists official website by sony, their label.

Yahoo's results:

1. the psychedelic furs / burned down days Open this result in new window
the psychedelic furs / burned down days ...

19. Pshycedelic Furs- Overview Open this result in new window
" [Richard Butler's] elegant sneer and impassioned songs make Should God Forget a bang-up retrospective of a band that deserves one." -- Details, December 1997

So to me, google finding and linking the artists main official website as #2 instead of yahoo's #19 to one of the official sites pages deeper into the site clearly tells me in my own opinion that google is better. Like I said, quality not quantity is better to me..

Oh well though, who the hell would go thru thousands of search links anyways.. if it doesn't hit within the first few pages, I'm not going any further most likely and going to change my search terms to something more detailed to get better results.

Exactly... I am the same way... If I search on google and don't see what I feel is relevent to my search withing the first 2 pages I will narrow my search parameters... searching through a million hits is just rdiculous.

I personally, am of the opinion - especially when it comes to computers, that every job, has a tool that will do it more effectively, more easily, and better that anything else that is designed for more that that purpose.

I very much like yahoo...I think there are a lot of things to be said for them, and what they have contributed to the internet. I use messenger every day. But, they are more than a search engine - and that's the problem. They just don't search as well as Google. No banner adds - no junk....just what I want.

That says it right there :)

Another thing...they are pretty in line with my socialist-linux-hippie-computer-revolution politics...and have you seen the machines they run? Clustered old desktops? That's just cool :)

And I was just reminded of something - they convert .pdf's into HTML for you! Need I say more? :)

I think that sums it up. Google has said that searching is their main business. Look at GMail, the whole not deleting idea is based on having a fast good search. Try searching though thousands of emails in yahoo mail...its sloooooow.

vharishankar 08-19-2005 03:39 AM

It's because "google" has become synonymous with "searching". It's a strong brand identity created through a high-quality product backed by excellent marketing...

Google is also a very catchy word so people tend to identify it very easily...

LinuxSeeker 08-20-2005 03:56 PM

100% voted Google so far...

Blinker_Fluid 08-20-2005 05:54 PM

You can search from Yahoo?
I thought they just did chat, streaming music and IM... ;)

Yes, Yahoo dumped Google and designed their own search engine, and I've found that they are either better at filtering out spam or are simply not targeted by cloakers yet.
